Man accused of trying to bribe his alleged victim

MUNCIE, Ind. — Authorities say a Muncie man jailed on a battery charge tried to bribe his alleged victim to not testify against him.

The Star Press reports 32-year-old Jason Leon Smith faces one count of attempted bribery for phone calls he allegedly made from the Delaware County Jail over the past month.

Chief deputy prosecutor Judi Calhoun says Smith is accused of trying to persuade an acquaintance to offer the victim in the pending battery case $1,000 in exchange for her silence.

Prosecutors last week also charged Smith with two counts of attempted invasion of privacy stemming from the alleged bribery offers.

Smith was arrested Jan. 17 on allegations he violated the terms of a restraining order by sitting in a van outside his alleged victim's home.
