INDIANAPOLIS — Members of an Indiana Senate committee raised worries about the effectiveness of a proposed ban on texting while driving even as they advanced a bill that would do so.
The Senate corrections committee voted 7-2 Tuesday to endorse a bill already approved by the House that would extend the state's current texting ban for drivers younger than 18. The bill sets a maximum $500 fine but would allow motorists to use hands-free technology.
Sen. Brent Steele of Bedford says he doesn't believe police could enforce the ban unless it applied to all cell phone use.
The House and Senate have both approved texting ban bills but must agree on a single version for it to become law.
The Senate resumed committee hearings Tuesday while House Democrats continued their boycott.
