Indiana treasurer set to launch challenge to Richard Lugar

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock plans to tour the state next week to formally launch his challenge to longtime U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in next year's Republican primary.

Mourdock has courted tea party groups that have been disgruntled with Lugar and say he hasn't been conservative enough.

Mourdock signaled to Republican gatherings earlier this month that he would run for the Senate. An announcement sent by his campaign Wednesday didn't state his decision but included the tagline "It's time ... for conservative leadership in Washington."

His campaign tour will start Tuesday with events in Indianapolis and Jeffersonville. He'll be in Evansville on Feb. 23, then in Crown Point, South Bend and Fort Wayne on Feb. 24.

Mourdock is from the Evansville area and has been state treasurer since 2007.
