Setup crews have been working since Wednesday to erect the rides, stages and vendor stands for this weekend's Late Nite Carnival.
Hannah Harrison, assistant director of Programs, said the preparations for the Carnival began in the Fall Semester. Late Nite and the University Program Board have been busy organizing the food, security, transportation and sponsorships.
"All advisory board members are charged with coordinating one area under the advisement of graduate assistants and professional staff," Harrison said. "In all, it takes approximately 60 to 75 people just working on Late Nite's side."
This year, Burton Brothers Amusements is providing the carnival setting. The company spent all day Wednesday and Thursday setting up concession stands and rides, including a Ferris wheel and roller coasters.
Burton Brothers is a family-owned business that travels throughout Indiana and the Midwest doing carnivals.
Burton Brothers employee Melissa Osborne and her team spent Wednesday setting up the concession stands that will provide students with typical carnival foods such as cotton candy and shaved ice.
Harrison said setting up a carnival is no simple feat, but the staff has done a great job communicating in order to avoid serious complications.
"Challenges are managed by being as clear and concise as possible," she said. "In an event of this size, communication is key."
She said safety is important in setting up the Carnival and certain precautions are required. She said University Police will be on site for both days of the event.
"Particular permits are required of different areas which are officially inspected by the state fire marshal," she said. "This inspection is held once all major elements of the Carnival are in place. The approval of the marshal must be given before the opening of the event."
After the carnival closes Saturday, crews have until Sunday evening to tear down the vending stands and rides.
"Tear down will likely take several hours. All rides, facilities and grounds equipment must be removed before Sunday evening to allow commuter students to have access to the space," Harrison said.
