DeKalb, Ill. – The return of starting quarterback Chandler Harnish to the lineup boosted Northern Illinois University to a 26-13 lead after three quarters.
Harnish had been sidelined for 3 ½ games with an injured knee. In his first series back, Harnish completed all four of his passes for 29 yards and led the Huskies to a field goal.
A 32-yard rush by wide receiver Nate Palmer on an end-around set up Northern Illinois' first touchdown since the first quarter. The Cardinals almost completed a goal-line stand, but a pass interference call on third down gave the Huskies the extra chance they needed to score. Harnish then found Marcus Lewis open in the corner of the end zone for the five-yard touchdown pass on a play similar to the one that drew the penalty.
Ball State was unable to get anything going offensively in the third quarter. They had no yards and two first downs in the quarter.
