Blood banks exceed goals for drives

Students on Ball State University's campus stepped up to a challenge put forth by two area blood banks this week.

The American Red Cross and Indiana Blood Center both hosted blood drives at Ball State earlier this week, hoping to stock up on their supply before holiday vacations and winter weather kicked in.

Delaware County's regional Red Cross set a goal of collecting 65 pints of blood, and Indiana Blood Center wanted to match their September collection of about 450 pints.

Both blood banks exceeded their goals this week.

The Red Cross collected 80 pints from donors, which is pretty consistent with other blood drives on campus, Shelby Norris, communications specialist for the Red Cross, said.

"Our high schools and colleges are some of the best places for donors," she said. "Students are passionate and they care."

Indiana Blood Center's final totals weren't available as of Thursday evening, but field representative Christine King said the group gathered at least 500 pints.

King said this amount was surprising because usually the September blood drive has the largest turnout. King said she and event organizer Kim Hiatt put a lot of effort into educational presentations and received more interest from student groups and volunteers at this drive.

"We completely impacted the blood supply in the state," she said. "We're very grateful and very happy with the blood drive."

What's next?
Members from the Red Cross will be back on campus noon to 4 p.m. Friday on a mobile bus parked in the lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The group will be giving out free t-shirts to people who donate. Students interested in giving blood at this time can sign up for a time at givelife.org.

The Indiana Blood Center will be at Ball State Jan. 20 and 21 at Pruis Hall. More details about the event will be available closer to the date. Students who want to donate can register anytime at donorpoint.org.
