DN Weekly Awards

Each week, The Daily News' sports crew picks its PPQ - the play, player and quote of the week.

But it doesn't stop there. With the help of our online voters, the weekly fan choice is also featured.

This week's best:

Play of the weekJunior midfielder Kristina Anderson (soccer) - In the 67th minute of Ball State Univeristy's 4-0 win over Lipscomb University on Friday, Anderson sent a corner kick into the 6-yard box. With a little bit of what she called "luck" the ball curved and sailed past the Lipscomb goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Ball State a 2-0 lead. The goal was Anderson's first of the season.

Player of the weekCliff Morrison (men's tennis) - the sophomore from South Africa claimed both a singles championship and a sportsmanship award in the weekend's Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Morrison won all three of his singles matches against players from Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University, and as for the sportsmanship trophy: "My parents would be proud," Morrison said.

Quote of the week"We were beat by effort. It was impressive to watch Penn and how they played. They refused to let the ball hit the floor and we were not able to match that effort or mentality." - Women's volleyball coach Dave Boos on Ball State's 3-1 loss to the University of Pennsylvania.

Fan's choiceLauren Pickrel (women's tennis) - With 16 votes and 33 percent of the poll, the freshman Pickrel won this year's fourth fan choice poll. Pickrel won the Flight "D" singles championship of the Ball State Fall Invitational as she defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Beth Ganser 6-7 (5), 6-0, 10-2 in the championship match.
