WOMEN'S GOLF: Golfer wins state tournament

Cardinal finishes even, beats rest of field by 5 strokes

Two weeks after dropping from first to tenth on the final round of competition at the Indiana Women's Open, Ball State University women's golfer Brittany Kelly won the Indiana Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship.

Kelly won the championship, defeating second place Missouri University golfer Julia Potter by five strokes. Tobi Herron and Michigan State University golfer Aimee Neff are in third and fourth at 6- and 7-over par. During the second round of play on Tuesday, Kelly competed the Otter Creek Golf course in Columbus with a tournament low 67.

Kelly was one of five golfers from the Ball State women's team to compete in the event.

Ball State golfer Rachel Pruett tied with Taylor Gohn for fifth place at 10-over par.

Two strokes behind Pruett, Kristtini Cain finished in ninth place. Katie Windlan tied for 37th, while incoming freshman Autumn Duke tied for 51st place.

Last year, Kelly finished fourth at the event and seventh the in 2007.

This is the last major summer tournament for the members of the team. The Cardinals first match of the regular season is September 13-15 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Primm, Nev.
