FOOTBALL: Davis named finalist for Manning Award

Cards' signal caller 1 of 10 nominated for QB of the year award

After leading his team to a 12-0 start and earning the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year award, Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis received another honor Monday.

The junior was named one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, which is given to the nation's best quarterback in college football. He joins a group of signal callers that include last year's Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow of the University of Florida, as well as this year's front runners the University of Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas Tech University's Graham Harrell and the University of Texas' Colt McCoy.

Davis is one of two quarterbacks on the list from a non-BCS conference, along with the University of Utah's Brian Johnson. He's also one of four quarterbacks from a team not ranked in the top 10 of the BCS standings.

Davis ranks eighth in the nation with a passer rating of 164.05, 10th with 3,446 passing yards, 12th with a 66.9 completion percentage and 14th with 26 passing touchdowns.

The Manning Award winner will be announced following the bowl season. Ball State (12-1) will play Tulsa (10-3) in the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 6, 2009, in Mobile, Ala.
