WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State unable to knock off host Hoosiers

Cardinals now 0-2 in TIS Bookstores Indiana University Invitational

BLOOMINGTON - The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16) to host Indiana University in front of an energetic University Gymnasium crowd.

With the 3-0 loss to the University of Cincinnati earlier in the day, the Cardinals (3-10) move to 0-2 in the TIS Bookstores Indiana University Invitational heading into Saturday's finale against George Mason University at Assembly Hall.

With the win, the Hoosiers moved to 24-20 in the all-time series with Ball State.

Ball State coach Dave Boos said the Hoosiers' (8-3) ability to spread the ball around the Ball State defense made things difficult.

"I thought Indiana came out very fired up and they were swinging hard on every ball," Boos said. "The bigger issue was our offense just couldn't keep up with their offense."

The Cardinals had a .000 attack percentage in the first set before decreasing that total to a -.042 percentage mark in the second set, although the team scored one more point (18) than in the first set (17).

Ball State's junior Elaina Kakatolis led the Cardinal effort with six kills on two hitting errors and also had three blocks.

The Hoosiers' Erica Short, who entered the day ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten with five kills per set, lived up to her billing by hitting a match-high 18 kills. Also, on her 12th and last dig of the match, Hoosiers senior Juli Pierce became the school's all-time leader in career digs.

The Cardinals play George Mason, who lost 3-1 to Indiana earlier today, Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
