OUR VIEW: Break time

AT ISSUE: Students can fight the mid-semester slump, stress by stepping away from problems, creating action plan

Take a break, everyone.

Just step back, gulp a couple huge lungfulls of air and walk away from everything that is stressing you out for a few minutes. We've hit that tough time of the semester, where many students inevitably hit a mid-semester slump. Either you're freaking out because there's only 22 days of classes left before Finals Week arrives, or you're burnt out and counting the minutes until Winter Break arrives. Or you could be suffering from both circumstances.

No matter how you're feeling, November can be a tough month for students. That's why everyone needs to just take some time out to do something - or nothing - for themselves. Go on a walk. Read a book. Zone out on your couch. Pretend you have an extra hour every day. Getting away is the first step in getting over burnout and stress.

Once you've pulled yourself together enough to manage basic daily function again, it's time for a plan of attack. Decide what's really important and what you want/need to accomplish by semester's end. Then focus on that handful of things. Otherwise, like the players of Humans vs Zombies who ended their game early on Friday because of general burnout, some people will try to achieve too much and fail at all of it. Or they won't try to do anything and then achieve that goal. Unfortunately, doing nothing usually doesn't produce passing grades.

Don't let November, with its chilly weather and shorter days, get to you. You've survived 11 weeks, and there are only four and a half weeks of classes until finals. Don't give up now!

Chill out, set your priorities and get finished. The holidays will be so much sweeter once you've passed all your classes.
