It is now possible for dudes to dance with each other and keep it totally hetero, according to a clip from Something Else's comedy sketch "Man Dance."
"Man Dance" is an online comedy sketch produced by the student organization, Something Else, said senior Al LeVine, executive producer of Something Else. The sketch will air on the CW Network's television show "Online Nations" on Oct. 7 at 10:30 p.m., he said.
"It is kind of like our national premier," said junior Nick Reczynski, producer of Something Else.
Four different dances: the two-step, five minutes for fighting, the fight-starter and the Grab 'N' Noog are included in the "Man Dance" sketch, Reczynski said.
Something Else is in its fourth season and its episodes have steadily become short-form sketches, which are sketches lasting fewer than five minutes, LeVine said. The group's weekly sketch is filmed during the weekend, produced 10 days later and can be accessed from its Web site or YouTube, he said.
By making content only for the Web, Something Else opened itself up to a larger audience, said Rich Swingley, telecommunications instructor.
The group's online sketches are becoming more and more popular, LeVine said. By the end of each week, he said the sketch will have had about 1,500 viewers.
Something Else is gradually trying to achieve the label of viral videos, where the sketch's popularity plagues blogs and forums all over the Internet, LeVine said.
Members of Something Else make the project unique by running it without help from faculty or staff, Swingley said. Something Else helps students develop certain skills such as time management and equipment usage, he said.
"They really have a very democratic way of approaching their show," Swingley said, "When they have their weekly meetings, everyone shows their ideas."
The producers allow all group members to pitch their ideas so Something Else can come out with the funniest sketch, said senior Mike Straub, producer of Something Else.
By allowing the members to share their ideas, the producers of Something Else ensure seniority rule will not affect which sketches are produced, Swingley said.
The main idea of Something Else is for everyone to have fun, said Benjamin Dewhurst, Ball State alumnus and reverend of Universal Life Church.
However, he said there were times when comedy became hard work.
"I remember being so stressed out that comedy just wasn't funny anymore," Dewhurst said. "When you've been up from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Saturday you kind of start to hallucinate."
Having dedicated so much time to Something Else, Dewhurst said it is exciting that the project is getting bigger and better.
"Something Else tries to push the limit and see how far we can go," said LeVine.
The group attempts to make controversial sketches that test their own creativity, he said.
By being an online comedy show, Something Else is one step ahead of the multimedia, said senior Kristopher Knight, producer of Something Else.
"Something Else just wants to offer something different," Knight said.
