Rockin' McKinley

Students gather for musical event; SGA sponsors a fireworks show, the Hot Dog Man serves food to customers

As the bells rang from Shafer Bell Tower, Homecoming 2007's Music on McKinley began.

Despite the cold weather, a large number of festival goers moved from act to act and stand to stand. Jacob Laskowski of the Newman Center was on hand with a variety of student artworks.

"It is a great way to display your talents," Laskowski said.

Radio station WLBC covered the festivities, and the Hot Dog Man served students and other customers.

Students performed on a variety of instruments, from ukuleles to stand-up basses, and covered genres from 1980s rock to today's Top 40.

Among the tables set up for students, the Dietetics Association gave out free chex mix accompanied by health guidelines, and the Crochet and Knitting Club sold knitted garments from hats to gloves, which most festival goers found appropriate for the sudden change of weather.

Freshman undecided major Zach Hunter said Music on McKinley had a nice atmosphere for creativity and friendship.

After student musical performances, chairs were set up for John Gouwens' carillon concert.

After the carillon concert, the festivities moved up McKinley Avenue toward LaFollette Field. The Student Government Association set off its fireworks display to a crowd covering most of McKinley Avenue.

The festivities concluded as the last red and white fireworks burned into the sky.
