Organization hosts voter registration drive in Atrium

Voter registration comes to Ball State University's campus this week.

University Democrats President Peter Nelson said the student organization will host a voter registration drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Atrium in front of the bookstore.

In order to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 6 election, students must register by Oct. 9, Nelson said.

Students can register to vote for the first time, or change their registration from their hometown to Muncie, he said. If they intend to vote in Muncie, they must be registered here, he said.

"I think it's important for students to register in Muncie while they're here," Nelson said. "They spend at least nine months per year here, and the policies the local officials make affects them more than those of their hometowns."

Those who wish to vote in their hometown's election can sign up for absentee ballots or return home to vote in person, Nelson said.

Sponsoring the registration helps support local and national democrats, Nelson said.

"It always makes us look good when we're out working hard to get votes," he said.

Other organizations will sponsor registration opportunities throughout the week, he said.

Registration is free and students need to bring a valid driver's license, Nelson said.
