NetMRI to assist Ball State

University uses add-on system to help manage network

About $40,000 was spent for an addition to the network management system called NetMRI. It was made possible thanks to Ball State University's computing services.

Senior Enterprise Network Engineer Daniel Fortriede said the system involves behind-the-scenes products important to network technicians, but not about finding viruses or trojan programs.

"This isn't something the end user is going to see," he said. "This is about finding network-setting issues and high-error rates the average person will not notice. Students don't think about these types of things and they shouldn't."

The system was uploaded during the summer and is not a new system, but an add-on to the existing network management system, Fortriede said.

Yama Habibzai, senior director of marketing for Netcordia, the company that produced NetMRI, said the system serves the same purpose as an MRI in a hospital that provides deep analysis of a product.

"Basically we are giving you a MRI of the network," he said. "We basically allow the user to better manage the network, so users are not affected by the degradation of network performance."

The system will correlate performance information and configuration information together to complete an active profile of the network, Habibzai said.

"The product does the thinking for them," he said. "[Such as] being able to collect a lot of different information, detect anomalies based on industry-best working practices as well as Ball State's existing policies."

Habibzai said industry-best working practices are procedures taken to encounter less problems while operating the system.

"Engineers actually go and get trained in these practices," he said. "We have that built into the product so they don't have to."

The NetMRI possesses other advantages such as less than 30 minutes of installation time and to analyze and provide actionable results in the first 24 hours, he said.
