180 students attend job fair

36 high-profile insurance, financial companies attend

State Farm, New York Life and Liberty Mutual were just a few of the national firms represented at the third-annual Insurance, Actuarial Science and Financial Services Job Fair.

More than 180 Ball State University students showed for the fair, Professor of Insurance Steve Avila said.

"We have 36 companies represented here," he said, "and that makes this one of the largest job fairs [of its kind] in the country."

Avila said he organized the event with the Career Center's help with the intention of providing a concentrated job fair for students interested in the insurance or financial fields, which includes actuarial science.

"Actuary science is the math behind insurance companies," he said.

Avila said companies relish the chance to meet with quality candidates, and the fair represented a prime opportunity to meet with companies specific to one industry.

To spread the word, Avila said, he sent mass e-mails and told his classes about the fair.

Rhonda Davies, a regional recruiter for Farmers Insurance Group, said her company uses job fairs to get the word out about the company. She said she was happy with student turnout, but wished some students would take the opportunity as more than just a chance for free points in their classes.

"It's easy to tell which students aren't taking it serious," she said. "They're wearing flip-flops and have pink hair."

While some students said they attended because their professors offered extra credit, other students said they found the job fair to be a great help.

Junior actuary sciences major Brandon Steinbrook said he came out of the fair with two interviews and several other companies that showed interest in his services.

"I liked it a lot better than the big job fair [in September]," he said. "I think there were like two people looking for actuaries at that one."

Avila said he was excited about the fair and it was definitely something they want to keep doing in the future.
