Convicted killer of BSU student petitions sentence

A Delaware County judge is deciding whether to allow a convicted killer of a Ball State University student to appeal his sentence.

Larry Newton filed a petition for belated notice of appeal to Judge Robert Barnet Jr. on Sept. 6, according to the County Clerk's Office.

According to previous reports, Newton, then 17, was one of three Muncie teenagers who were arrested then convicted for the murder of Ball State student Christopher Coyle.

Barnet sentenced Newton to 65 years in prison for conspiracy to commit robbery and criminal confinement, according to reports. Barnet then added a life sentence without parole for murder.

Newton was arrested in September 1994 for shooting Coyle in the head during an attempted armed robbery, according to reports.
