SOFTBALL: Cards defeat IUPUI, fall to Bellarmine

Ball State to compete in round-robin games at Fresno State

The Ball State University softball team (3-3) was able to snap its two-game losing streak yesterday with a 4-2 win against IUPUI. However, the Cardinals lost their next game against Bellarmine University 1-0.

"We had a lot of scoring opportunities and should have won this game but we just didn't execute properly," Laux said.

Despite her previous loss in which she gave up six earned runs on 10 hits, Ball State pitcher Quincy Duran was able to rebound from her last start by pitching a complete game against the Knights.

In Fresno, Cal., the Cardinals are scheduled to play six teams over a three-day span from March 9-11, including two games against top-25 ranked teams, No. 25 Fresno State and No. 15 Washington.

On the first day, Ball State will play the University of San Diego (9-6), followed by a night game against Central Florida (8-7). The next day the Cardinals will take on Oregon State (13-2) and then they will play Fresno State. Ball State will then conclude the tournament on Saturday with games against DePaul (7-2) and Washington (12-3).

The Cardinals have fewer wins than any of the six other teams in the tournament, which to some people might make them the underdog team.

"When you are playing the top ranked teams in the nation you're going to be considered the underdog," Laux said. "I'd rather be the underdog, though, than the favorite because as the underdog you have nothing to lose."

If Ball State effectively plays the underdog role in this tournament, they can do something which no Cardinal softball team has done in more than two years by beating a ranked opponent.
