Beginning this semester, the Student Organizations and Activities office has a new home. Formerly housed on the lower level of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, SOA moved to Student Center Room 133 on the first floor soon after finals week.
SOA assistant director Cara Luyster said the new location is well-lit, spacious and modern - a striking contrast to the basement office's cramped and dreary quarters.
"The space is a lot more open and welcoming," Luyster said. "It's more in the center in the Student Center so we'll probably get more of the drive-by traffic. It might attract students who might not have stopped by in the past."
SOA Secretary Maria Bumbalough said she was happy with the move. The new space includes a larger conference room, larger offices for student organizations and a lounge area.
"In general it's just a more comfortable space for everybody," Bumbalough said.
Student Center Room 133 will also continue to house the Office of Orientation and the Student Art Gallery, Bumbalough said.
Betsy Mills, Panhellenic Council parliamentarian, said moving her office to the new space had caused a few problems.
"There's a lot of packing and getting rid of stuff," Mills said, "but a lot of it was communication; letting people know where we are."
Student groups with cubicles at the SOA office can move in starting today and groups with offices can move in Tuesday, Bumbalough said.
Parking Services is set to occupy SOA's former location in the Student Center Room L-1 after renovations are completed in the next few weeks.
Gene Burton, director of public safety, said members of Facilities Planning and Management told him the old Parking Services building was going to be torn down and made into parking lots.
