Dear Editor,
At 4 p.m. Wednesday, I, along with about 50 members of the BallState University community, witnessed the fact that the Board ofTrustees holds only contempt for our wishes or they just don't careabout them.
During an open forum in Cardinal Hall in the Student Center, thepresidential search committee formed by the board met with theuniversity community for its input on the search for a newpresident.
This contempt was obvious as the board stonewalled any questionabout how the committee was formed or about why the board refusedto include the official participation of the American Associationof University Professors, the Student Government Association,University Senate or our local blue-collar union in thepresidential search. This "hand-picked" committee only offered afive-minute segment with no elaboration on any point.
As I sat there looking at the very few who did show up, I beganto wonder if the board takes such actions were because no one willstand up to it. I wondered where all the people who have talked andtalked about the lack of accountability were. I wondered when theywere going to start fighting back. It seems they want to talk thetalk but are afraid to walk the walk.
A Ball State professor wrote in the Aug. 26 Star Press that"preventing faculty and students from having a significant role incampus governance" has become a campus tradition. Maybe that isbecause we have let it, and we are the only people who can stopit.
The question is not, "Can we make the board more accountable tothe Ball State Community?" The question is, "Will we?"
