WHO, ME?: Crackdown on celebrations

Lately, the oppressive powers that be have cracked down on celebrations, making it difficult for anyone to enjoy themselves. Groups of people can no longer get together and have a good time. I'm not talking about Ball State University or the city of Muncie and what some view as their respective draconian views on college partying, even though it might seem like it.

Ball State travels to Indiana to avenge last year's 24-23 home loss

Last week's loss to the University of Illinois was fewer than 30 minutes old, but Ball State University fifth-year senior captain Cortlan Booker said he was already looking ahead to this week's game. "With the team that we play this week, I don't think we have to worry about this loss lingering," Booker said as he sat in full pads in the Illini visiting locker room.

Students produce short film

A group of Ball State University students await judging results for a short film they produced in 24 hours for a film festival. Senior Paul Symons said Apple's Insomnia Film Festival was a film-making competition for students around the county. Judges will announce the winners on Nov.

Thompson gets job as broadcaster

Almost four months after Ronny Thompson resigned from Ball State University, the former men's basketball coach was hired as an analyst for the Washington Wizards and college basketball. Comcast SportsNet Communications Manager Stephanie Offen said Thursday the company's familiarity with Thompson contributed to his hiring to be an analyst for its basketball coverage.

BSU relaunches Ruckus service

Ruckus has been relaunched and Betsy Mills, president of the Ball State University Student Government Association, said this was a wonderful way for students to download music for free. MAC computer users are not able to use the service, she said, but more than 53 percent of students on campus use it.

Sigma Kappa to have charity event

Sigma Kappa sorority is having its second annual Texas Hold'em Tournament today with the proceeds going to Alzheimer's disease research. Ball State University students have their choice of playing poker or euchre from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.

Muncie property taxes might eat you alive

Increases in Delaware County property taxes are wreaking havoc on Muncie residents' wallets, and Ball State University students are no exception. Property value determines how high or low property tax is for a business or apartment complex or a home, said Allison Quirk, member of Muncie City Council.

Undead 'burn out,' end game early

The campus-wide game that turned Ball State University into a feeding ground for the undead ended last night with a final mission. Event organizer Andrew Ketrow said the event was concluded because of a general "burnt out" feeling among game participants, who wanted to get back to their regular routines.

Ball State program loses grant funding

A federal agency will discontinue funding for Ball State University's Office of Victims Services, but that could benefit the university, June Payne, director of counseling and health services, said. OVS, which helps women who have been involved in sexual assault, began in 2006 when Ball State received a grant from the Department of Justice for Violence against Women, Payne said.

After her freshman year, no one expected sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett to explode onto the scene in the Mid-American Conference in 2007. However, when classmate and 2006 starter Caroline Lehman departed the Ball State University field hockey team due to a chronic back injury, the field opened up.

SOCCER: Cardinals clinch MAC championship

By the time the Ball State University soccer game at Miami University was complete Thursday, the result was irrelevant. The Cardinals (12-5-1, 9-1-1 Mid-American Conference) won their second consecutive MAC regular season championship as they defeated Miami (6-9-3, 4-6-1 MAC) 2-1 in overtime.

Bowling Green A former Bowling Green goaltender was promoted to the NHL Wednesday. The Boston Bruins recalled Jordan Sigalet after Bruins' goaltender Manny Fernandez strained his knee in practice Tuesday. Sigalet was selected by the Bruins in the seventh round of the 2001 NHL draft.

SOCCER: Cardinals play RedHawks with MAC title on the line

A 4-2 victory against Miami University ended the 2006 regular season and secured the first Mid-American Conference championship for the Ball State University soccer team. Three days later Miami defeated Ball State in the first round of the conference tournament.

Elevator traps students in Studebaker West

Ball State University students were trapped in an elevator in Studebaker West Complex about 8 p.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Terrell Smith of University Police. "Two people, students, were stuck on the eighth floor," he said. "The outer door [of the elevator shaft] was open, but the inner door was closed.

North Late Loop starts tonight

The North Late Loop is scheduled to begin tonight and will run from 9:50 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. Ball State University students can take the trolley to five restaurants on Muncie's north end. The restaurants are Bygones Bar and Grill, CJ's, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Sunshine Café and Texas Roadhouse.

Senators pass 2 bills on safety

Two pieces of legislation that would work to improve student safety passed the Ball State University Student Government Association Wednesday. Senators voted 25-8 to fix the Quad sidewalks so there are fewer cracks and areas of standing water when it rains.
