Before 13-year-old Travis Huff had a match he said he was sad and had nobody to talk with. Three years ago that changed, he said, when he met Emelie Martlage. Now, he bowls, plays pool, goes out to eat and plays video games with her, he said. He even made the A/B Honor Roll at his middle school for the first time.

Candidates discuss issues on Muncie's future

Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Mansfield says he wants to focus on the needs of the entire Muncie community. Mansfield said this is his first year running for the position of mayor. Sharon McShurley sees a bright future for the Muncie community, she said, a future she believes she can help usher in if she is elected mayor as the Republican candidate in today's election. She is an Anderson native and after graduating Highland High School, McShurley said, she attended Indiana University where she received her associate's degree in general studies.

No winner declared in Muncie mayoral race

Muncie officials will not declare a winner of the mayoral election for 10 days, county commissioner Tom Bennington said. During the 10-day time frame, the city will recount 13 provisional votes, then count them for a final total, Bennington said. After the winner is announced, the losing candidate can then call for a recount, Bennington said.

FOOTBALL: Cardinals eliminated from MAC title contention

The Ball State University football team was eliminated from Mid-American Conference championship contention Tuesday. With a 34-31 win Tuesday against Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University improved to 5-0 in the MAC and won the West Division.

MEN'S TENNIS: Team ends fall season with few wins at tourney

The men's tennis team didn't win an A-flight or doubles match as they competed in the Texas Invitational last weekend, the team's last match of the fall season. Senior Jarrod Epkey and junior Jose Perdomo made it the furthest of any Cardinal on Saturday. Epkey lost to University of Arizona's Peter Zimmer (6-2, 6-4) and Perdomo dropped his match to Boise State University's Steve Roberson (6-3, 7-5) in the round of 32.

FOOTBALL: Booker: Players will use bye week to recuperate

After 10 weeks, Ball State University football players and coaches will receive their first bye week of the fall. Though football teams have mixed feelings toward bye weeks, Cardinal coach Brady Hoke said his team is in need of a break before playing its last two games of the season.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals split weekend meets

One day after the University of Toledo beat the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team, the Cardinals rebounded and defeated Bowling Green State University. Ball State beat Bowling Green 193 to 107 as the Cardinals won 11 of the day's 16 events.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: Zippy earns playoff spot in competition

Zippy clinched a spot in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge playoffs and the top spot overall with an eighth consecutive win last week. Zippy (8-0), the mascot of the University of Akron, defeated Cosmo (4-4) of Brigham Young University with 26,344 votes compared to Cosmo's 24,887.

Usually, the main goal of a college student is to earn a degree. (At least that would explain why we spend thousands of dollars on tuition every year.) So we attend classes, do homework and study. However, most students are living on or near campus and away from their families and friends back home.

The Ball State University Foundation received the Nonprofit Award for Excellence from the publication Foundation & Endowment Money Management.

Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Mansfield says he wants to focus on the needs of the entire Muncie community. Mansfield said this is his first year running for the position of mayor. A Muncie native, Mansfield serves as the executive director of the Muncie Visitors Center for six years, he said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU's lack of height doesn't prevent team from rebounding

Entering the 2007-2008 season, the big knock on the Ball State University men's basketball team is a lack of height, as junior forward Anthony Newell, at 6'5", is the tallest player on the roster. The Cardinals spent Sunday's exhibition game against Anderson University setting to work on proving that a lack of size won't keep them from dominating the boards, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds in an 82-61 victory against the Division III Ravens.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win season-high 2nd straight match

For the second straight match, the Ball State University women's volleyball team came away with a victory, matching its longest win streak of the season. The Cardinals defeated the University of Akron on the road 3-2 (25-30, 30-27, 23-30, 30-25, 16-14). They improved to 5-22 and 4-10 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory.

Zombie game comes to close

Three days after the activity that turned Ball State University into a feeding ground for the undead concluded prematurely, students are making plans to organize another round of the game. Event organizers for Humans vs. Zombies, a campus-wide role-playing game involving more than 400 students, said the event was an overwhelming success because it provided a place for students from different social circles to find common ground and interact.
