There was no lack of effort by the Ball State University track and field team on Friday as it played host to the Ball State University Triangular. Despite finishing third with 89 points behind Western Michigan University, 114.50 points, and Miami University, 94.

'Resident Liberal' to speak today

The collaborative efforts of several student organizations and the College of Communications, Information and Media will bring an Emmy Award-winning journalist to Ball State University. National Association of Black Journalists, Black Student Association and the Multicultural Center worked with CCIM to sponsor a visit from "Resident Liberal" Juan Williams, who will present "American Leadership - Stories of Inspiration and Power behind Proven Leaders" at 7 p.

BSU Republicans endorse Andrews-Albritton '08

The Ball State College Republicans endorsed the Andrews-Albritton '08 campaign on Monday. "We are very happy with this development and are proud to be endorsing a campaign that's main focus is the future of Ball State," a spokesman for the Ball State College Republicans said.

A hazy practice

If you ask any handful of average Ball State University students what they know about Voodoo, you'll probably get responses about New Orleans, Voodoo dolls, zombies and rituals. The reality of Voodoo isn't quite what we see in the movies, though, said Don Merten and James Nyce, two professors from Ball State University's anthropology department, but it's just as interesting.

College Idol

A crowd of about 50 cheered and danced in their seats as seven Ball State University students competed to become the first College Idol. Event organizers said they hoped more students would attend the free event at Pruis Hall, which seats 700. Melody Blevins, publicist for Street Theory Records, the company which sponsored the competition, said several universities in Indiana and Ohio would have auditions and semi-finals prior to the final event, which is April 19 in Fort Wayne.

About one in eight college students has an eating disorder of some sort, Ball State University counselor Kasee Matters said. Apply this statistic to our campus and that would translate to more than 2,000 students. Thousands more are affected, having friends or family members with eating disorders.

Comedy film focuses on mullet hairstyle

Student comedy group, Something Else TV, is bringing the laughs to the big screen. Al LeVine, executive producer of Something Else TV, said members of the organization recently finished production on their first short film. The group, which produces weekly episodes on the Internet, decided to start Something Else Films in order to provide another project for their growing number of members, LeVine said.

BASEBALL: Cardinals split weekend series against UAB to open season

Playing outside for the first time in months, the Ball State University baseball team split a four-game series with the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The Cardinals were down 8-1 after six innings in game one, which was just big enough for a five-run ninth inning to fall short as they lost 8-7.

Race day queens

Four Ball State University students will be traveling throughout Indiana to promote the Indianapolis 500. According to the 500 Festival Web site, 263 Indiana women from universities statewide applied to participate in the 500 Festival Princess Program. The princesses attend events and volunteer programs throughout the month of May, performing community outreach programs, according to the site.

In Beth Messner's office in the Letterman Communication Building, her windows let in some light from a overcast day. Despite the dreary conditions, Messner, associate professor communications studies, said she noticed the season's effects by feeling tired during the winter months.

Recently, the Ball State College Republicans put up flyers around campus. I will not try to deceive any readers. I am part of this group and was among the members who put the flyers up around campus. The vandalism of our flyers that came soon after gave me no doubt as to where our campus is for the most part politically.

SOFTBALL: Coach gets first winning weekend

For the first time in the tenure of coach Craig Nicholson, the Ball State University softball team finished a weekend with a winning record. The Cardinals (5-5) went 4-1 at the Panera Bread Tournament at Chattanooga, Tenn. to improve to .500 on the season, another feat the Cardinals had not accomplished before in the tenure of the second-year coach.

GYMNASTICS: Record set in defeat

For the second consecutive meet the Ball State University gymnastics team set a season high for points. This time the Cardinals scored 189.800 in a loss to Eastern Michigan University. The Cardinals were propelled by a 48.225 score on the floor exercise which was a season high.

Williams motivates, challenges students to be leaders, speak out

It is important that students don't just sit back, "we need to stand up, speak out, and create change," political analyst Juan Williams said. Williams intended to challenge students to overlook their doubts and actually go out and do something. In his speech Williams, "one of America's leading political writers and thinkers," motivated students to think of themselves as a "prized commodity.

Expectations for Ball State University's men's basketball coming into this season were at an all-time low. People didn't expect them to win very many games. All they cared about was that the team always gave 110 percent. The team has certainly given its all in each and every game.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals win pair of home matches

After watching his second consecutive serve fall slightly long of left service court, Eduardo Pavia stared at the ceiling of the YMCA Tennis Center and vocalized his frustration. "Oh my God, land a serve!" the freshman said angrily as he fell behind two games to one against Indiana State University Sunday.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards crack the top-15 national rankings

For the first time this season a Ball State University athletics team is nationally ranked. The men's volleyball team received 36 votes and was ranked No. 14 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top-15 poll that was released Monday. Ball State has won nine of its last 10 matches.

BASEBALL: There's a new saves leader

At six foot five inches, Ball State University closer Kyle Heyne towers on the mound slinging his slider, fastball and changeup to close the door on his team's victories. Up until this past weekend, Heyne was tied for the Ball State career saves record with a self-described short, fat with little power pitcher from the 1980s.
