When Ball State University German professor Ron Warner commutes the four miles round-trip to and from his office on campus, he doesn't use a car. Instead, he hops on his Raleigh 500 two-tone gray commuter bike. Warner is among a growing number of people who, for various reasons, have parked their cars and opted for a more fuel-efficient, athletic and environmentally friendly mode of transportation - the bicycle.

Indiana unemployment spikes

More workers in Indiana lost their jobs than in any other state last month, with the unemployment rate jumping from 5.3 percent to 5.8 percent. According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, this translates into a loss of 17,900 jobs, the largest increase in unemployment in the U.

According to the 2004 U.S. Census less than 50 percent of young adults in the 18- to 24-year-old age demographic voted during the 2004 presidential election. Gary Crawley, assistant professor of political science, attributes this low turnout to the fact that many young adults are not very well established in their careers and communities.

BSU to fix buildings by 2012

During the next four years, several Ball State University buildings will undergo two phases of construction, a university official said. The Teachers College, North Quad and Applied Science and Technology buildings will be renovated, with completion planned by 2012, said Randy Howard, associate vice president of finance and assistant treasurer.

Discount Den set to close

A Village staple since 1970, the Discount Den could close by the end of the month, store manager Heather Seybold said. Its 50 cent sodas, selection of tobacco products and greek life apparel make it a beloved business to Ball State University students. The exact closing date is unknown at this time, however, because prospective buyers had become interested, Seybold said.
