As MiQuale Lewis watched his team lose to Rutgers University during the International Bowl on a freezing January afternoon, he yearned to throw on his uniform and join his teammates in the huddle. The only thing preventing Lewis from buckling his helmet straps and running onto the field was an ACL tear he suffered in his right knee at the University of Nebraska in the fourth week of the season.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals predicted to finish fifth in MAC

After failing to live up to expectations last season, the field hockey team will start 2008 without much of that extra baggage. Ball State University was picked to finish fifth of six teams in the Mid-American Conference by the league coaches in a poll released last week.

Admittance increases for 2008-09 year

As more than 3,800 freshman enter Ball State University this fall, 122 will find themselves living in study lounges to begin the year. For the first time in three years, the number of freshman admitted to the university has outnumbered the amount of rooms available for the students to live in, Director of Housing and Residence Life Alan Hargrave said.

Cars must go to fairgrounds

Students will have to move their cars from Scheumann Stadium to a new location this year as Ball State University's first football game draws closer. Instead of parking on campus like previous years, vehicles parked in the stadium parking lot are being forced to move to the Delaware County Fairgrounds to better accommodate people commuting to Ball State.

SOCCER: Cards fail to win opener

A slow start in the regular season opener for the Ball State University soccer team got coach Michael Lovett off to a slow start with the Cardinals. In the first game under their first-year coach, the Cardinals lost 1-0 at Valparaiso University on Friday. "We had a hard time coming out of the gates," Lovett said.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards predicted third in MAC West

The Ball State University women's volleyball team was picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference West Division in the preseason poll released by the league office Monday. The Cardinals return three starters - junior outside hitter Julie Breivogel, junior opposite hitter Elaina Kakatolis and sophomore libero Alyssa Rio - from last season's team that was 5-25 overall and 4-12 in MAC play.

FOOTBALL: Ticket sales increase

With the raised expectations for the Ball State University football team has come an increase in the season tickets sold for the 2008 season compared to seasons passed. On Monday Rob Richards, director of ticket operations for Ball State, said season tickets sales were up by a few hundred compared to last year at about 3,700 and that the number will rise as game day approaches.

Hairstylist Judith Ann started to lose her train of thought as she concentrated on cutting a Ball State University student's hair while attempting to carry on a conversation on the busy corner of University and McKinley. "I'm sorry, I'm trying to talk," she said.

Indiana is considered a swing state for the 2008 presidential election

When Democratic nominee Barack Obama concluded his speech at Ball State University on April 12, the Illinois Senator proclaimed he wanted to turn Indiana blue this November. Obama's words turned some heads. Indiana's traditionally conservative roots haven't classified it as a swing state since Lyndon Johnson won the 11 electoral votes for the Democrats in 1964.

Ball State riders take off

Whether for fitness, recreation or transportation, Ball State University cyclists say the bicycling trend is taking hold. Kyle Perry, architecture student and president of the Ball State Cycling Club, said the club has increased membership from two students a few years ago to as many as 30 this year.

BSU Fit classes free for the week

The construction dust might not be settling for a few more years, but Recreation Services is still offering a full list of programming this semester, including free BSU Fit classes for the rest of the week. Associate Director Jason Adamowicz said his goal for Recreational Services is to maintain the standard menu of programming as facility construction carries on into next semester.

Injuries from car accident kill student

Growing up, Nick Linvill enjoyed traveling to different places and was considered by friends and family to be an eclectic person. He was a 4-H exchange student during high school and went to places such as Japan, Mexico City and Poland. He became fluent in Spanish and tested out of several Spanish classes at Ball State University.

Hearing his alarm clock blare every morning two summers ago at 6 a.m., a Muncie Central High School senior football player constantly faced a decision most would rather not contemplate at the crack of dawn. On one hand, he could take the easy road and remain locked underneath his covers in his air-conditioned room.
