Homecoming slogan meant to tie in with election year

Many students have been wondering "What's with the 'Red, White + U'?" The Homecoming Steering Committee selected the slogan as a way to appeal to individual students on campus, integrate the Ball State University theme that incorporates a plus sign in its advertising and tie it all together with the upcoming election, Publicity Chairman Jennifer Regnier said.

A native to India, professor emerita of mathematical sciences Padmini Joshi came to the United States in the 1950s, but her knowledge of Indian art is something she still wants to develop. For her, Indian miniature art is something new and interesting. "I bought a book on Indian art," she said with a smile, "But I haven't had the time to read it.

Fraternity population numbers increase to 528

Although new member numbers for fraternities remain the same as last year, the male greek population as a whole has grown from 505 to 528, Ken Burger, program coordinator for Greek Life, said. Burger said fraternities are retaining more members because of some of the small changes made to recruitment.

FIELD HOCKEY: Facing the record book

If the Ball State University field hockey team needed any extra motivation to break its record-tying nine-game losing streak, it will get it Saturday when the team celebrates senior day against Central Michigan University. Though the Cardinals have two more home games after Saturday, senior day ceremonies will be held then because it is the final Saturday home game, allowing more family members to attend.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards treat preseason tournament like regular season

Regular season matches are when wins and losses really count, but once you put "conference" in the title of a tournament it doesn't matter if it's the preseason or deep into regular season play. Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull said the Ball State Invitational earlier this season was relaxed, but the Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.

As Wednesday's Student Government Association meeting started, senators listened to James Hager speak about Student Code Awareness Week, which will take place from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31. Hager, a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards, said the awareness week would be a way to inform students about their rights and standards while at Ball State University.

FOOTBALL: Fans pack buses for football games

The 55 spots on the bus to Western Kentucky University on Saturday for the Ball State University football game were almost sold out Wednesday. The Cardinal Varsity Club is sponsoring the bus to Bowling Green, Ky., and has sold about 50 spots already, Executive Director Jerry Peirson said.
