MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals defeat Eastern Illinois in season opener

The Ball State University men's basketball team defeated Eastern Illinois 72-59 Saturday afternoon at Worthen Arena in both team's season openers. Coach Billy Taylor said he was satisfied to get win No. 1 this season under his belt early on. "I'm really proud of our guys coming out and playing really well in this first game," Taylor said.

In a season filled with positives, one of the negatives that stood out for No. 17 Ball State University was its sloppy performance Oct. 11 at Western Kentucky University. After the 24-7 win, coach Brady Hoke criticized his team's poor execution and singled out the Cardinals' seven penalties for 71 yards.

There was a time when divisions served a purpose in sports. Early on when sports were first becoming massively popular, travel wasn't easy. Cars didn't exist yet and the main way of traveling was by train. A team playing in New York couldn't easily play against a team in Ohio or Indiana.

FOOTBALL: Cards slip in new BCS Standings

A 15-point win against a last-place team earlier this week was not enough for the Ball State University football team to stay at No. 14 in the new BCS Standings. The Cardinals (10-0, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) moved down three spots to No. 17 in the standings released Sunday afternoon.

The director of the Multicultural Center develops relationships and programs of students who are traditionally underrepresented, Dean of students Karl Beeler said. "The world is multicultural," Beeler said. "So the center is a very important part of the university.

Retention rates rising

In an effort to retain students and increase enrollment, Ball State University has put time, effort and money into its first-year initiatives. Kay Bales, vice president of student affairs, said after the retention rate dropped below 75 percent in 2004, Ball State set a goal of 80 percent by 2012.

Looking to improve his pitching staff, Ball State University baseball coach Greg Beals signed four pitchers on the first day of the early signing period. Pitchers Jonathan Cisna, Derek Grabner, Kyle Raleigh and Wes Winkle are joined by second baseman Stephen Claypool and catcher Kevin Franchetti.

On Wednesday, Yorktown High School senior Joe Gasser signed a national letter of intent to play for the Ball State University men's golf team next fall. "I've always been a Ball State watcher with the golf team," Gasser said. "I know some players on the team and the university is basically in my backyard.
