Ball State hires new soccer coach

Ball State University named Michael Lovett, a former assistant at Virginia Tech, as its new head soccer coach today. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins announced Lovett would succeed Michelle Salmon, who left Ball State to take the head coaching position at the University of Cincinnati Jan.

CMD to conduct $3.5 million study

Ball State University's Center for Media Design has received a $3.5 million commission to conduct a research study on media consumption, which will begin this month, Michael Bloxham, CMD director of insight and research, said. According to a press release, the Center for Research Excellence, a subsidiary of Nielson Media Research, will provide funding for the project.

Sporting sneakers and nametags and drinking cans of Monster and Rockstar, more than 100 students line-danced to party songs, played basketball and mingled with strangers - all for the purpose of saving children's lives. When Alpha Omicron Pi sorority changed its longest-running philanthropy from a basketball to a dodgeball tournament, its members weren't sure if it would work. The 40-year-old philanthropy's changes brought in 20 teams and raised $825 at Irving Gym Saturday.

GYMNASTICS: Cards score 189 for third straight time

For the third consecutive meet, the Ball State University gymnastics team scored at least 189 points. Competing at Michigan State University Sunday against the Spartans and the Mid-American Conference's Western Michigan University, the Cardinals scored 189.

BASEBALL: Offense galore in Cards 2-2 weekend

Offense was the name of the game for Ball State University this weekend. In a four-game series with New Mexico State University the Cardinals compiled a total of 64 runs, an average of 16 per game. Like last weekend, Ball State dropped the first two games of the series 8-7, 24-19.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards tie record for season losses

This time, turnovers were the undoing of Ball State University. Despite three players in double figures in scoring and hot shooting, the Cardinals fell 75-64 to Eastern Michigan University, turning the ball over 19 times. Coach Billy Taylor was not available for comment after the game.

MEN'S TENNIS: Purdue beats BSU for seventh loss

Coming out of its 6-1 loss at Purdue University Friday, the Ball State University men's tennis team reminded its coach, Bill Richards, how the team has lost seven matches this season. "It was a carbon copy of other losses we had this year," Richards said.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards win two in Tennessee

Kathy Bull has been head coach of the Ball State University women's tennis team for 21 years. After the Cardinals' match against the University of Memphis Friday, Bull said the postgame headache she experienced was a first of her career. "Memphis is a team that are loud, they cheer, they were chest bumping," Bull said.

SOFTBALL: Wasted chances hinder Cardinals

Wasted opportunities cost the Ball State University softball team this weekend, as it lost three of its five games at the UT-Martin Tournament. The missed opportunities cost the Cardinals (7-8) in their second game Saturday against the host University of Tennessee at Martin.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Worthen crowd record shattered

Following the No. 14 Ball State University men's volleyball team's sweep against No. 7 UCLA on Saturday, coach Joel Walton shook hands with Bruins' coach Al Scates and then immediately looked for a microphone. With record crowd at Worthen Arena, Walton wanted to make sure all 3,572 people in attendance knew how much their support meant to the Cardinals.
