Village tobacco store to close

From Staff Reports The Little Havana - Tobacco Cabana in the Village will soon close its doors, building owner Shirley Staggs said. Little Havana began cutting store hours last week and has been selling its store decorations and products, such as cigars, hookahs and speciality cigarettes, at discounted prices.

The British Broadcasting Company is offering Ball State University students a chance to compete for two paid work experiences this summer in London. The BBC's iTV Production Team is looking for students to pitch interactive television ideas. Dressed in their green and gold robes, 30 members of the Wilberforce University Choir filled John R. Emens Auditorium with the sound of music during the Unity Week keynote address by Rev. Floyd Flake. Flake, the president of Wilberforce University in Ohio, came to Ball State University on Thursday to convey a message about changing attitudes in a community to make people more united.

Ball State University students, faculty and staff have until Tuesday to give feedback for the 2007-08 Freshman Connections Reader. The Freshman Connections Coordinating Council selected three finalists Wednesday and announced them through e-mail.

Web site publishes undergrad papers

Undergraduate students across the nation can share their honors theses and other major papers with the world by publishing online. The Web site ugresearch.org, created by Dartmouth College alumni, is an e-library of undergraduate research projects such as theses, independent research papers and journal articles, Web site creator Peter Noteboom said.

Massive search continues

WEST LAFAYETTE - More than 300 people volunteered for a campuswide search effort Thursday to look for missing Purdue University freshman Wade Steffey. Aside from the volunteer force, police from Purdue, Lafayette, West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County, as well as the FBI and Porter County K-9 units, participated in the search.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals look to rebound from DePaul loss

After Ball State University lost to DePaul University Sunday, men's tennis coach Bill Richards emphasized learning from mistakes and using them as motivation. "It's definitely very big for us to just play a lot better," Richards said. The Cardinals defeated IUPUI Saturday, but lost to DePaul Sunday in a match Richards said the team should have won.

The next installment of "Survivor" will include a Ball State University graduate and former tennis player, who men's coach Bill Richards described as a fiery competitor with a temper. Advertising executive Edgardo Rivera will be one of 19 contestants in "Survivor: Fiji," the fourteenth season of the CBS reality television show that premieres Feb.

Car crash doesn't stop chairwoman

When Christine Shea, Ball State University's Modern Language and Classics chairwoman, comes to campus today, she said she looks forward to shocking students and faculty. Shea fractured a vertebra when a car hit her and senior Cass Zamora as they drove to Muncie from Indianapolis on Monday night.

Stadium parking lot to close rows

Starting Jan. 21 rows M and N of the stadium parking lot will be closed indefinitely, according to parking services. The north section of the yellow parking lot will be reserved for construction traffic and equipment, Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said.

Student missing since Saturday

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) - Police officers, friends and family members searched around the Purdue University campus for a freshman student who authorities said was last seen over the weekend. Tracking dogs and a helicopter were used Wednesday in the search for Wade Steffey, 19, of Bloomington.

SGA begins 2007 with projects underway

Junior Matt Lacy was unanimously approved for the position of Parliamentarian after junior Jaime Manuel's term as a senator ended. SGA is pleased with the success of the Blue Loop shuttle, which runs through the area east of campus. About 150 students per day rode the shuttle this week, and the number of riders has doubled since the start of last week.

Students taste foreign recipes

Unity Week at Ball State University is a chance for students to experience different cultures, and Wednesday night the Multicultural Center gave students a taste of the world. The center hosted A Cup of Culture and filled students' stomachs with ethnic foods, such as Norwegian soup, Spanish meals, Serbian food, spicy Italian spaghetti and Laotian fried rice.

After experiencing some truck troubles this past weekend, I went to the auto part store and bought a carburetor, a fuel filter, a flux capacitor and an alternator. My father informed me this was not a good idea, but next week I am going to take my truck down to the mechanic for the first time and tell him to fix the problem.
