Living, as I do, in an accommodating community and attending an accommodating university, I sometimes forget just how unreasonable some people can be when it comes to their beliefs. I forget that there are people who can't stand the fact that others have different opinions about the eternal destination of their soul.

Student groups to aid Late Nite staff

Multicultural groups at Ball State University are working together to put on Late Nite this Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Groups including the Asian American Student Association, the Black Student Association, the Latino Student Union and Spectrum will each run a certain program, Assistant Director of Student Life Tiffany Washington said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Junior blossoms with team's support

In her first two seasons, Lisa Rusche averaged eight and a half minutes per game with one start and totaled 108 points. Her junior campaign has been an entirely different story. Playing in the post, Rusche has started every game except senior night this season, averaging 24.

Events raise $117,027 for scholarship

The contributions and dedication of Ball State University alumna Rebecca Reichert will not be forgotten within the music education department. Through the efforts of faculty members, her family, the rock band the Goo Goo Dolls and Reichert herself,, a sustainable legacy fund has been established in Reichert's name, said Kimberly Inks, Reichert's life-long friend and associate professor of music.

Students push for Braille signs

A Ball State University junior is pushing to make it easier for himself and other blind students to navigate around campus. Joe Hodge met with the Residence Hall Association on Thursday to discuss putting Braille signs and labels around campus. Having Braille signs with the room number on all doors will make it much easier for blind students to find their destination without assistance, Hodge said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Seniors to make last home appearance

This Sunday Skip Mills, Chris Ames and D'Andre Peyton will step onto the court in Worthen Arena for Ball State University's men's basketball team one last time in their collegiate careers. The times have been trying during their tenure at Ball State. Mills is the only senior to play at Ball State when the team had a winning season.

UCC-21 adds tech literacy requirement

Students could be required to take a technology literacy course if the Ball State University Core Curriculum for the 21st Century is approved. Both the Student Government Association and the University Core Curriculum subcommittee of University Senate have discussed this issue.

OUR VIEW: Feeling the way

Joe Hodge, a Ball State University junior, is working with the university to put Braille signs on rooms all around campus. The signs would help blind students find the right room when they get into buildings on campus. Some doors on campus, such as those in the Art and Journalism building, already have Braille on the plates that identify room numbers for every room.

Dance majors will present choreography works of their own creation as part of the Junior Choreography Showcase, sponsored by the Ball State University Department of Theater and Dance. "Heartbreaker," a spoof of the Christmas classic "Nutcracker," is one of eleven dance numbers choreographed by students that will be featured in the showcase at 7:30 p.

String trio focuses on audience interaction

Three is sometimes considered a crowd, but a Philadelphia trio has made the number work for them. The classically-trained Time for Three will perform at 7 p.m. in Pruis Hall. Violinists Nicholas Kendall and Zachary DePue and double bassist Rannan Meyer attended the Curtis Institute of Music.

On-campus housing fills fast at BSU

Park Hall may have had a major influence on the number of students returning to the dorms this fall. This year, 340 more students have applied to live in the dorms than last year. Alan Hargrave, associate dean of Student Affairs and director of Housing and Residence Life, said the percentage of students signed up, is higher than the past several years.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State goes on offensive

A huge matchup with MIVA leader Ohio State University looms next weekend for the Ball State University men's volleyball team. However, this weekend the team needs to take care of business before it can focus on the Buckeyes. On Friday, the Cardinals (8-6, 3-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) will make a six-hour trip to play Quincy University in a conference tilt before traveling to Carthage College Saturday.

Trailing 41-32 at halftime of Wednesday's game against Northern Illinois University, senior point guard Kelsey Corbin knew her team needed to get out to quick start in the opening minutes of the second half. Fortunately for the Cardinals, both Corbin and Porchia Green realized the urgency of the moment.

With a school-record 20 losses on the line, Ball State University's men's basketball team is looking for a win against one of the Mid-American Conference's top teams. The Cardinals (9-19, 5-9 MAC) will travel to Savage Hall to play the University of Toledo (16-11, 12-2 MAC), where they have not won since 2002.

Ball State University is launching the second national search this year for a dean, as another one announced she is leaving her position. Lynn Richardson, Miller College of Business dean, announced she accepted the position of dean of the College of Business and Industry at Mississippi State University on Tuesday.

TOWARD DISRESPECTFUL AUTHORITY: Students should pay attention to important news

Reading up on current events online a couple of weekends ago, I came across a striking picture depicting a two U.S. soldiers in Mosul, Iraq. What really caught my attention was an M16 rifle lying in the forefront of the picture in the sand. Although a soldier may not wear body armor or a helmet or carry a gas mask for certain missions, nearly nothing will persuade him to leave his personal weapon.
