In her words ...

[Editor's note: The following editorial was written by Woodlan Junior-Senior High School sophomore Megan Chase.] We live in a world where we grow up being taught that it is only acceptable for a boy and a girl to be together. So how do you think you would feel if as you grew older and more mature you started noticing people of the same sex as you, rather than the opposite? I can only imagine how hard it would be to come out as homosexual in today's society.

Two thousand and sixteen tiny, bright spots of color decorate the Quad's green grass. The shining sun in a clear, blue sky casts shadows of tall, leafless trees onto the ground. Children clutch colorful woven baskets and plastic grocery bags that blow in the wind.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State to participate in 10-team tournament

Coming off a first-place finish at the Butler Spring Invitational, Ball State University women's golf coach Katherine Mowat said the team is in a good place for its next tournament. The team will continue its season Monday in the first of a two-round tournament hosted by the University of Cincinnati.

GYMNASTICS: BSU finishes fourth at conference meet

A season of highs and lows concluded Saturday as the Ball State University gymnastics team placed fourth out of seven schools in the Mid-American Conference Championships. "Honestly, it was such a surreal feeling," coach Lisa Simonton said. "It was so amazing.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards cruise through weekend

Middle attacker Ben Irwin doesn't play much, but when he plays at Worthen Arena the crowd is aware of it. Coming off the bench in game two of Saturday's match, Irwin received one of the largest reactions from the 327 people in attendance during the No. 15 Ball State University men's volleyball team's sweep against Mercyhurst College (30-22, 30-18, 30-27).

BASEBALL: Ball State now last in MAC West

Entering a weekend series at Miami University, the Ball State University baseball team had a chance to climb above .500 for the first time all season and improve to 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Instead the Cardinals got swept by the Redhawks, putting them five games below .

SOFTBALL: Cardinals split four games

While the Ball State University softball team's 2-2 record this weekend was average, one player had an accomplishment that was not. Ball State (11-19, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) began conference play this weekend by splitting its four games against Ohio University and the University of Akron.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards fall to conference foes

When the No. 3 doubles team of Emma Retter and Katherine Rist completed their 9-7 come-from-behind victory against Eastern Michigan University on Friday, little did they know that would be the highlight of the weekend. After taking all three doubles matches against the Eagles, Ball State University (6-10, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) dropped four of the six singles matches in a 4-3 loss to Eastern Michigan.

Students learn etiquette at formal dinner

In the movie "Titanic," Jack Dawson is faced with a dining dilemma when he doesn't know which piece of silverware to use first. Thankfully, the Unsinkable Molly Brown rescues him and tells him to start on the outside and work his way in. This advice might seem simple, but not everyone will have a Molly Brown sitting next to them at a formal dinner.

It's not disrespectful, but during meets, the Ball State University gymnastics team doesn't watch its competition perform. That won't change Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich., coach Lisa Simonton and senior Jenna Tarkington said.

National hip-hop artist comes to Muncie

A hip-hop artist who has collaborated with the likes of Eminem and 50 Cent will make his Muncie debut tonight in Irving Gym. The Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the University Program Board will present Lil Scrappy at 9 p.m. The fraternity has been working to coordinate the event for more than a year, Andrico Spates, Omega Psi Phi member and coordinator of the event, said.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Junk e-mail spreads panic

Checking my e-mail earlier this week, I found something curious in my junk folder. Generally, junk e-mail consists of messages from someone from one of my classes begging me for notes because they have not actually shown up all semester, messages from Ebay telling me what a great deal I could get on a used toaster and message from the Ball State Multicultural Center reminding me that it still, in fact, exists.

Alleycats will prowl the Muncie streets Saturday as part of an event organized by two Ball State University students. Junior Peter Cavanagh and Senior Trever Bennett have publicized the event by distributing fliers around campus and in the Village and spreading the word on campus.

Same-sex couples fear losing domestic benefits

Ball State University interior designer Dan Stephenson said when his mother died four years ago, his partner had to use vacation days to attend the funeral, a benefit automatically given to married couples. Since then, the university passed a regulation letting same-sex domestic partners take time off for a death in the family.

THE SCENIC ROUTE: Travel by car beats bicycles

In Wednesday's paper, one of my esteemed colleagues claimed that "The bicycle is the best mode of transportation." Spoken like someone who has never been without the option of driving or riding in a motorized vehicle. Bicycles are a fine way to get around, don't get me wrong - I own one myself and wish I spent more time on it.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Freshmen pave way for success

Playing freshman in the lineup in nothing new for women's tennis coach Kathy Bull. In the past, she has had four freshmen filling out the match-time roster. This year, they are playing a similar role. That plan will not change this weekend when Ball State University plays host to Mid-American Conference foes Eastern Michigan University Friday and the University of Toledo Saturday.

Roller receives four-year deal

With two days left on her contract as the women's basketball coach, Tracy Roller signed a four-year deal Thursday that pays her a base salary of $181,000 per year, a 70 percent bump over last year's salary. The deal guarantees the most successful women's basketball coach in Ball State history will receive at least $724,000 over the next four years and locks her in as coach until March 31, 2011.
