YOUR TURN: Nonviolence can effectively change society

I want to thank Joanna Lees for addressing student complacency and the topic of nonviolence in her column "Young adults too complacent" in the Friday edition of the Daily News. Her assertion though, that nonviolence only works if both parties are willing to participate, is incorrect and reflects an all too common misconception of the principles of nonviolence as developed by Adin Ballou, Henry David Thoreau, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

BASEBALL: Cardinals lose non-conference game at Notre Dame

For the fifth straight game the Ball State University baseball team lost. Last night the loss was to the University of Notre Dame to the tune of 7-3. Both teams had eight hits, but the Irish had five more runners reach base. The reason was walks, players hit by a pitch and errors.

Robert De Niro certainly loved movies, and I'm sure Barack Obama could recite the American presidents in order by the time he could write in cursive. Stork stolen from birthing center

Muncie police are searching for suspects in the theft of a six-foot-tall wooden stork from Expectations Women's Health & Childbearing Center, according to police. Certified nursing midwife Barbara Bechtel said an employee first reported the stork missing on Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Catcher's home run leads Cards to victory

The Ball State University softball team was able to park its bus for the last time this regular season after it picked up a win Tuesday. In their final road game of the regular season, the Cardinals (20-28, 6-8 Mid-American Conference) defeated Butler University (21-17, 6-3 Horizon League) 3-1.

Ball State University football fans should probably get used to hearing Nate Davis and Dante Love's names intertwined. The duo connected for three touchdowns as the White team cruised to a 28-0 victory over the Cardinal team in the annual spring game Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Cardinals drop two to Miami

Nine errors and seven unearned runs led to a pair of losses for the Ball State University softball team against Mid-American Conference foe Miami University Saturday and Sunday. Ball State (19-28,6-8 MAC) committed five errors in Saturday's 5-0 loss to Miami (20-31-1,8-6 MAC).

It's every Ball State University students' worst nightmare: the time when friends from other schools ask about spring events that would be fun to go to. The sad truth is that many students outside Ball State would choose to attend events around the state instead of the Carnival, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Kings, queens strut stuff

The Cream Girls, three men dressed in sequined, ankle-length gowns and pancake makeup, climbed the bleachers of Ball Gym on Saturday night. The women's flashy act was the finale to a night filled with men and women singing and dancing while dressed as the opposite gender.

Law firm hired in 2005 to resolve major infractions

In September of 2005 Ball State University hired the law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King to help resolve major NCAA infractions involving the book-loan and softball programs. "When the university stepped into the textbooks, I think they felt like they needed a little help," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said.

Recently, I boarded a plane and watched this guy bark a litany of instructions into his cell phone. The viciousness of each command sounded as though whatever he was talking about was a matter of life and death. He spent the majority of the flight taking copious notes as he poured over various business materials.

Emma Retter had the opportunity to break the spell Miami University has put on the Ball State University women's tennis team. After winning the first set 7-5 against Victoria Pulida, she dropped the second set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, setting up a crucial third-set.

New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez is posting perhaps the greatest April in major league baseball history. So said Karl Ravech of ESPN, who called Friday night's Yankees Red Sox game where A-Rod went deep two more times, making it twelve home runs for the slugger in fifteen games of the season - the quickest pace in baseball history, putting him in line for 130 home runs for the year if his pace somehow keeps up.

MEN'S TENNIS: Five of six players win matches for Ball State

Ball State University's men's tennis team's rough season ended on a high note as the Cardinals scored a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois University Saturday, coach Bill Richards said. The Cardinals scored the win without junior Aaron Phillips, who usually plays in the second singles spot.

Coming off a pair of losses in which the Ball State University softball team committed nine errors, the Cardinals will look to rebound at Butler University today. In the team's final road game of the regular season, Ball State (19-28, 6-8 Mid-American Conference) will play Butler (21-16, 6-3 Horizon League).
