'Armed & Famous' premieres tonight

A private wrap party for the cast and crew of the new reality show "Armed & Famous," which premieres 8 p.m. tonight on CBS, will conclude their stay in Muncie. The show's producer, Tom Forman, said most reality shows do their taping and editing in 10 weeks, but he and his crew worked hard and finished "Armed & Famous" after seven weeks of taping.

Louis E. Ingelhart, who died Sunday night, was primarily known on this campus as the father of the Department of Journalism. Though he founded and then chaired the Department of Journalism for 25 years and expanded the department many times over, he could just as easily be recognized for his championing of the First Amendment and the rights it protects.

Even though he realizes DeHority Complex desperately needs renovations, freshman Robert Bunner said he will miss its tight-knit group of residents after it closes for construction this fall. Bunner has become very fond of DeHority after living there for a semester, he said.

Super Bowl commercials do not run cheap. Last year a 30-second slot ran on average for about $2.5 million, according to an article in USA Today. However, one former Ball State University student and his team might see their commercial for Doritos air for free.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State opens season with three games at Worthen

The Ball State University men's volleyball team will begin its regular season today. Currently, the Cardinals are co-ranked No. 14 in the country with the University of the Pacific, according to the CSTU/AVCA Division I-II Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll. Today is the first of three home games this week.

After numerous postponements and a semester-long delay, the Bookmark Cafe in Bracken Library is finally open for business. Although students now can visit the cafe to take a break from studying or researching while in the library, the delays were overly long and drawn out.

After a semester delay in opening, the Bookmark Cafe in Bracken Library is ready for customers. Liz Poore, assistant director of dining, said the cafe has a lot to offer students. Cold cereals, fresh fruit cups, yogurt, milk, soy milk, sandwiches, salad and pastries are some of the products available, along with retail items such as stainless steel, ceramic and French press coffee mugs and sampler syrup.

David Boos in as women's volleyball coach

Associate Athletics Director Nona Richardson sought two specific qualities in the next women's volleyball coach at Ball State University: success in recruiting and advancement in the NCAA Tournament. David Boos fits the bill. Boos, who has spent the previous five seasons at the University of Minnesota, became the fifth women's volleyball coach in Ball State's history Monday.

Sursa organ set to pipe up

In preparing for the first concert of the calendar year on Ball State University's 50-stop pipe organ, music performance professor Kirby Koriath chose his songs with care. At tonight's 7:30 p.m. concert in Sursa Performance Hall, Koriath will play 20th century French music, featuring Olivier Messiaen's "L'Ascension," an orchestral suite for organ, and selections by composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Simon Preston and W.

This Christmas Break taught me an awful lot about what we really need during the holiday season. I learned about how true joy can be found in the simplest of things. The Ball State Foundation elected new officers at its annual board meeting in November. Anthony Schneider, co-founder and managing director of Schneider Huse & Associates in Indianapolis, has been on the board since 1995. He was elected president of the board.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Five-game win streak has Cardinals rolling

For most of the student population, Winter Break provides a good opportunity to get off campus and catch up with family and hometown friends.-á However, the Ball State University women's basketball players didn't receive such luxuries. Instead, the Cardinals played six games and had countless practices over the past three weeks.

Campaign increases recruitment

Ball State University application numbers have increased from 8,153 for Fall 2006 to 10,098 for Fall 2007. This can be attributed to an extensive marketing campaign and an increase in recruitment, one official said. Chris Munchel, associate director of admissions, said the increase was because of new commercials and billboards.

Former football player released on bond

A former freshman Ball State University football player who spent almost three months in jail was released Jan. 3, Delaware County Jail officials said. Brandon Houston was released on $20,000 bond. Houston and Eulas Taylor III, another former football player, were arrested Oct.

Even after he retired, people from across the country would call Louis E. Ingelhart for advice on legal issues dealing with the First Amendment and student press rights, his son James Ingelhart said. He even testified in a few cases in support of freedom for student journalists.

New scholarships offer more opportunity

Incoming freshmen have two more opportunities to earn scholarships from Ball State University. The Otto W. Beebe Memorial Scholarship, named after an alumnus who died of cancer in 2000, is open to incoming freshmen or transfer students with a 3.5 or higher grade point average and an SAT score of 1,500 on the new 2,400-point scale.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU stuck in losing streak again

Ronny Thompson received a rude welcome in his first game in the Mid-American Conference, as the University of Toledo Rockets hit a last-second shot to beat Ball State University's men's basketball team 62-60. "You guys are going to think I'm crazy, but being out there you just have that feeling like 'Oh, that's going in,'" junior Peyton Stovall said.
