MINORITY POLITRICKS: BSU diversity shouldn't be an option

By nature, humans are diverse. It is fair to say diversity covers every single aspect of our daily life, including the shoes we buy, the food we eat, the people we vote for, the car we drive and the classes we take. When it comes to diversity, our personal modus operandi becomes our own choice; you can state that personal diversity is protected by the First Amendment of our Constitution.

Campus billboards, light poles and even the sidewalks are decorated with bright flyers urging students to attend meetings and join Greek, athletic, academic, multicultural and all manners of extracurricular activities. Join one - not because the flyers say to - but because of these tried and true reasons.

FIELD HOCKEY: Star freshman done at BSU

After her freshman season, goalie Caroline Lehman was on pace to break the school field hockey record for career saves. However, it's now unlikely she will ever make another field hockey save again. Lehman, who is not on the Ball State University field hockey team's roster this season, said doctors advised her to leave the team after suffering a spinal cord injury during spring practice.

More than 100 cited in 14 days

Local police departments cited or arrested more than 100 Ball State University students in the last two weeks, which is average for this time of year, Gene Burton, director of public safety, said. Ball State and Indiana State excise police have cited or arrested a total of 114 people for alcohol violations since Aug.

As a kid from just outside of Chicago (on the Illinois side), there's a lot of traveling back to Ball State University after the summer. Hours are spent driving on one of the most traffic-filled highways in the United States, I 80/94. As the traffic lets up, speeds increase and I get to see my favorite sign in the Midwest.

FOOTBALL: Hoke announces team captains

The three Ball State football captains for the 2007 season will be senior linebacker Cortlan Booker, fifth-year senior strong safety Chris Allen and junior center Dan Gerberry, coach Brady Hoke announced Monday. Booker started all 12 games last season, recording 64 tackles and leading the team with 14 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Officer crashes car into light pole

A City of Muncie police car sped around a corner, hit a light pole and skidded across the curb around 1 a.m. Tuesday in front of LaFollette Complex, according to eyewitness accounts. Freshman exercise major Ryan Lee said he was in his room when he heard the screech and looked out his window.

Multiculturalism will take center stage Wednesday as slam poets, cultural dances, alternative rockers and drag performers gather at Woodworth Complex to "Espresso" themselves. For those looking to express themselves, from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m Wednesday, Woodworth Complex and the Multicultural Advisors will be hosting "Espresso Yourself: A Multicultural Open-Mic Night.

FOOTBALL: Freshman earns spot as place kicker for Cardinals

Less than a week before Ball State University's first football game, coach Brady Hoke announced Monday freshman Jake Hogue will be the Cardinals' place kicker and kickoff specialist. Hogue will fill the position after Ball State lost former kicker Brian Jackson to graduation.

Although kickoff for the season opener is still two days away, the Ball State University athletic department is already reaching out to the fans. Starting at 11 a.m. the athletic marketing department will host a two-hour event at Frog Baby, located outside Bracken Library.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cornering goals

Since arriving at Ball State University in 2006, women's soccer coach Michelle Salmon has implemented an attacking style of offense. Salmon's offense led to 39 goals for the Cardinals last season, second most in school history. "We're a high pressure team," junior Sarah Schumacker said.

After Ball State University Dining introduced an online ordering system during the summer, students are taking advantage of the technology's features. Web Food is a system that allows students and faculty to use their meal points to order food online and schedule a pickup time.

Team places third in Active Ankle challenge

After winning its first match of Ball State University's annual Nike Active Ankle Challenge Friday, the Cardinals' women's volleyball team could not manage another win. Ball State beat the University of Maine (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) in its first match, but lost to Southeast Missouri State University (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) and The Ohio State University (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) in matches two and three.

Late Loop makes comeback

The Late Loop trolley returned Thursday to Ball State University with a different route to offer a safer night life, but riders will have to pay a fare. Mary Gaston, Muncie Indiana Transit System assistant general manager, said the route now includes another block north of University Avenue.

Candlelight vigil brings hope for peace

Ball State University students, activists, faculty and Muncie community members will gather 8 p.m. Tuesday at Frog Baby for a vigil to protest the United States' current military involvement in Iraq. The vigil is being sponsored by MoveOn.org, a Democrats in Action group, and Ball State's Peaceworker organization.

Meal plans, food prices increase

Ball State University Dining increased meal plan allowances and introduced more food selections, but some students are unhappy with the prices. Freshman Dan Pruitt said he has difficulty finding healthy food at affordable prices in the cafeterias. "It's cheaper to eat less healthy food," said Pruitt.

VOLLEYBALL: A family tradition

Unlike her brothers Nick and Lee, Danielle Meyer had only three matches in Worthen Arena to make an impression. After scoring 42 kills in three three-set matches and earning the 2007 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge Most Valuable Player award, the mission was accomplished.
