SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals split weekend meets

One day after the University of Toledo beat the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team, the Cardinals rebounded and defeated Bowling Green State University. Ball State beat Bowling Green 193 to 107 as the Cardinals won 11 of the day's 16 events.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE: Zippy earns playoff spot in competition

Zippy clinched a spot in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge playoffs and the top spot overall with an eighth consecutive win last week. Zippy (8-0), the mascot of the University of Akron, defeated Cosmo (4-4) of Brigham Young University with 26,344 votes compared to Cosmo's 24,887.

Usually, the main goal of a college student is to earn a degree. (At least that would explain why we spend thousands of dollars on tuition every year.) So we attend classes, do homework and study. However, most students are living on or near campus and away from their families and friends back home.

BSU Foundation honored

The foundation responsible for managing hundreds of scholarship funds and raising money for the new recreation center has received an award that will increase its credibility with future donors. The Ball State University Foundation received the Nonprofit Award for Excellence from the publication Foundation & Endowment Money Management.

Democratic candidate wants to focus on the economic development of Muncie

Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Mansfield says he wants to focus on the needs of the entire Muncie community. Mansfield said this is his first year running for the position of mayor. A Muncie native, Mansfield serves as the executive director of the Muncie Visitors Center for six years, he said.

After the final match was played in the Texas Invitational last weekend, coach Bill Richards had a conference with his team. All nine Ball State University players huddled around Richards as he spoke about the team's next step before the dual-match season, which starts Jan.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU's lack of height doesn't prevent team from rebounding

Entering the 2007-2008 season, the big knock on the Ball State University men's basketball team is a lack of height, as junior forward Anthony Newell, at 6'5", is the tallest player on the roster. The Cardinals spent Sunday's exhibition game against Anderson University setting to work on proving that a lack of size won't keep them from dominating the boards, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds in an 82-61 victory against the Division III Ravens.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win season-high 2nd straight match

For the second straight match, the Ball State University women's volleyball team came away with a victory, matching its longest win streak of the season. The Cardinals defeated the University of Akron on the road 3-2 (25-30, 30-27, 23-30, 30-25, 16-14). They improved to 5-22 and 4-10 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory.

Television satirist Stephen Colbert, who had been campaigning to be put on the Democratic ticket in South Carolina, was denied a spot on the ballot by the South Carolina Democratic Party late last week.

Zombie game comes to close

Three days after the activity that turned Ball State University into a feeding ground for the undead concluded prematurely, students are making plans to organize another round of the game. Event organizers for Humans vs. Zombies, a campus-wide role-playing game involving more than 400 students, said the event was an overwhelming success because it provided a place for students from different social circles to find common ground and interact.

FOOTBALL: Indiana's passing leads team to win instead of running

With memories of last year's game against Indiana University fresh in the minds of Ball State University defenders, the Cardinals knew how productive Hoosier quarterback Kellen Lewis could be running the football. In Saturday's rematch, the Ball State defense learned first hand why Lewis is second in the Big Ten in total offense per game.

Hammering a habitat

Wielding hammers and nails, dozens of Ball State University students joined a crew from Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a Muncie family. Members of Panhellenic Council and other students gathered in a Muncie neighborhood to work on a house's foundation on Saturday.

SOCCER: Cards advance to semi-finals

Following Sunday's soccer game, senior Lindsay Martin smiled and even jumped up and down as she went around retelling her story from the game. The defender scored the goal that gave Ball State University a 1-0 win against Miami University in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at the Ball State Soccer Field.

After developing a reputation during the past two seasons for playing in close games against teams from power conferences, the Ball State University football program took a step backwards Saturday at Indiana University. The Hoosiers led by double digits for most of the second half and beat Ball State 38-20.

Sorority has poker tournament

Players put on their best bluffs and showed their best hands to win all the chips they could at Sigma Kappa sorority's Aces High poker and euchre tournament Friday. Junior Sigma Kappa member Abby Kaffenberger said this was the second year the sorority had the tournament.

The first weekend for the North Late Loop trolley offered Ball State University students a ride to businesses on the north end of campus. Texas Roadhouse manager Paul Ramos said the business had a busy weekend but could not tell if the trolley had an effect.

We've hit that tough time of the semester, where many students inevitably hit a mid-semester slump. Either you're freaking out because there's only 22 days of classes left before Finals Week arrives, or you're burnt out and counting the minutes until Winter Break arrives.
