Colts fans didn't have their team to root for in Sunday's Super Bowl, but had a huge variety of commercials to enjoy. Of the almost 60 national ads, viewers saw very little repetition and got lots of laughs. The following are the Daily News' top picks. Judge dismisses mayor case

Judge Joel Roberts dismissed Democrats' petition for a special election today, Republican Party Attorney David Brooks said. Democrat Party Attorney Michael Quirk filed the petition after Jim Mansfield's 11-vote victory over Republican Sharon McShurley was overturned in an official recount last December, he said.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals sweep double hitter

After a 4-1 deficit in doubles to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, the tandem of Joe Vallee and Brett Berryman started getting stared down by their onlooking coach Bill Richards. Shortly following a talk with the coach, the duo won seven of their next nine sets securing the doubles point for Ball State University.

Muncie Gras attendance increases

Mild weather brought about four times more Muncie Gras customers than last year, according to Kent Shuff, owner of Vera Mae's Bistro. Muncie Gras 2007 was plagued by bitter cold temperatures, causing potential customers to stay home instead of heading downtown, Shuff said.

INDIANAPOLIS - Attorneys in the McKinney v. Duplain civil trial approach closing arguments, at which point the jury will go into deliberation to review the evidence. Judge Richard Young said Friday examination of witnesses and evidence should conclude late Monday.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Comeback spoils Ball State's upset bid

Twice this season the Ball State University men's volleyball team rallied from a two-game deficit to win a match. Saturday night the reverse happened. No. 7 Stanford University defeated Ball State 28-30, 25-30, 30-22, 31-29, 15-11 to end Ball State's four-match winning streak Stanford's (7-3) outside attacker Evan Romero had a match-high 34 kills, including five kills in game five.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals get road win in California

For coach Joel Walton, Friday's win proved a victory last season against at team from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation wasn't a fluke. The Ball State University men's volleyball team beat the University of Pacific for two consecutive seasons. However, this season the win came on the road as the Cardinals won 30-23, 30-26, 28-30, 30-25.

The Ball State University women's tennis team will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., this weekend for a pair of matches against Big East opponents DePaul and Marquette universities. The Cardinals (2-0) have not played a match since their 7-0 sweep of Wright State University on Jan.

Thieves break into Village bar

The owner of the Locker Room is offering a $500 cash reward for information about suspects involved in a burglary at the bar. Manager Brandon Newman said the break-in happened between 4:30 and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. According to police reports, unknown suspects climbed gas pipes to the roof and entered the building by using a cinder block to smash a plywood-covered skylight.

Some downtown businesses will relish in the boost of sales thanks to Muncie Gras customers, while others will provide more of a refuge from the festivities Saturday. Cheryl Crowder, program manager of downtown development, said this year's Muncie Gras will "turn Walnut Street into Bourbon Street.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Morale stays high for Cards despite losses

Despite three straight losses and a 3-16 overall record, the Ball State University men's basketball team thinks its season is far from over. "We're not down," senior guard Peyton Stovall said. "Nobody likes to lose, but we've just got to continue to work in practice and get better.

Slightly less than a year ago, Kelsey Corbin's primary obligation was to handle the point guard duties for Ball State University's women's basketball team. Corbin, the Cardinals' lone senior in the starting lineup last season, tended to those responsibilities, averaging 12.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Women prepare; men on sidelines

When Ohio University visits Ball State University on Saturday, the Cardinals' women will have a chance to avenge last year's loss to the Bobcats. The men's team will not. Ohio's men's swimming and diving team defeated Ball State 145-98 last year at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals to travel to Bloomington

Although the Mid-American Conference Championships are a month away, the Ball State University track and field team is already getting accustomed to the routine of the meet. The Cardinals travel to Bloomington this weekend for the Indiana Invitational, a two-day event that features a preliminary round Friday and a final round Saturday.
