Legends Ball honors six faculty, staff

The Legends Ball event program defined a legend as "someone who has served the African American and Ball State University community whose achievements are aspiring others to believe and achieve." Award recipient Maude Jennings didn't consider herself one, she said in an interview prior to the event.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Looking for West Coast respect

Coach Don Shondell still remembers the last time UCLA was at Ball State University. Playing in the 1972 NCAA men's volleyball final four, the Bruins defeated Shondell and his Cardinals in the semi-finals and went on to win their second NCAA championship. Now, 36 years later and retired, Shondell will sit in the Worthen Arena stands Friday and Saturday and watch UCLA return to Muncie for a tournament that bares his name.

The Ball State University track and field head coach Randy Heisler expects a battle when his Cardinals travel to Eastern Michigan University Friday for the Mid-American Conference Championships. "It's going to be tight," Heisler said. "Ten points could separate third place from seventh place.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards head south for two matches

Four matches remain before the Ball State University women's tennis team opens up its conference season against Miami University on March 22. Despite two straight home victories last weekend, freshman Eduardo Pavia couldn't help but to look ahead to Friday's match against Purdue University. Saturday's dance marathon to benefit Riley's

About 100 Ball State University students will dance the night away to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday in Irving Gym. Chelsea Backus, dance marathon president, said the ninth-annual Ball State University Dance Marathon is open to all students for the first time in its history.

This has been a stressful week for Ball State University junior Marissa Castillo. Costume pieces are missing, music is late, and it's up to her and seven other dance students to make sure everything runs smoothly. BSU fraternities recruit 50 members

Nine Ball State University fraternities have recruited 50 members, an IFC official said. The Interfraternity Council released the numbers Wednesday after the totals were officially counted. Coty Calvin, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said fraternities raised $1,740 in philanthropies and worked 1,533 hours of service last semester.

TRACK AND FIELD: Runner earns national academic award

The Ball State University cross country team and sophomore Ali Bishel received honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team on Tuesday. Bishel qualified as an individual by carrying at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and completing a minimum 24 semester hours through the 2007 fall term.

Prosecutor plans to file charges

The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office plans to file charges against four Ball State University-affiliated women who were arrested in connection with an assault at a party in October, Deputy Prosecutor Judi Calhoun said. Calhoun said she decided to file charges of battery with serious bodily injury against Ball State students Kari Streib, 20, Ashley Kirkman, 20, Rene Whiteley, 19, and former student Amanda Polson.

Charity event to celebrate cancer survivors

"Celebrate, remember, and fight back" is the theme for the 2008 American Cancer Society's Relay for Life that will be held from 3 p.m. April 18 to 9 a.m. April 19 at LaFollette Field. Relay for Life is an overnight charity event held throughout the United States to celebrate cancer survivors, remember people lost to cancer and to promote cancer awareness.

Senators receive praise for work

Feelings of joy and sorrow resonated through the Ball State University Student Government Association as senators had their last formal meeting of the legislative term Wednesday. Senators, caucus chairpersons and committee leaders thanked and congratulated everyone on the work they have done this year.
