Dean, associate provost appointed

Ball State University's new associate provost for research and dean of the graduate school plans to recruit more high-quality graduate students and research-faculty members to campus. After Robert Morris held the interim position for almost eight months, the university announced Thursday he was chosen from a pool of three candidates to have the permanent position.

BSU dance makes cut

With their hair gathered tightly in buns, aprons tied delicately over their 1950s dresses and doll-like smiles painted on their faces, 11 female dancers whisked around Melanie Swihart and Jacob Wright, who portrayed a quintessential '50s married couple. Ball State University dance professor Audra Sokol choreographed the piece last semester for Ball State Dance Theatre, and the department took it to be judged at the American College Dance Festival Association's East Central Regional Conference this month.

FOOTBALL: BSU hires O-line coach

A couple weeks before the spring scrimmage, Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke announced on Wednesday the addition of former Colorado State University assistant coach Darrell Funk to his staff. Funk, whose first day with the Cardinals' program was March 17, will tutor Ball State's offensive line during the upcoming season.

MEN'S GOLF: Ball State faces familiar teams at IU meet

The Ball State University men's golf team will be competing in the Adidas Hoosier Invitational this weekend in Bloomington. The No. 18 Hoosiers are playing host to the 15 teams in the tournament. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday.

Throughout the 2008 season the Ball State University gymnastics team has worked hard toward continued improvement, and the team hopes its season can culminate with a strong showing in the Mid-American Conference Championship this weekend. Small mistakes throughout the game piled up for the Ball State University baseball team Tuesday as it lost 6-4 at the University of Notre Dame. After an eight-day layoff because of five cancellations that were caused by rain and snow, the Cardinals (8-9) had trouble shaking off the rust in the loss to the Irish (11-7-1).

BASEBALL: Offensive explosion fuels Cards' win

Down 3-1 to Anderson University going into the bottom of the second inning Wednesday, the Ball State University baseball team needed a boost. The Cardinals gave themselves that boost by cranking five home runs in the inning, putting 11 runs on the board and building a lead the Ravens couldn't match, powering Ball State to a 20-12 win.

Campus Alliance holds first meeting

Campus Alliance held its first Ball State University Student Government Association meeting Wednesday and about 20 senators filled the seats. In previous meetings, about 50 members filled Student Senate. President Frank Hood said Cabinet positions would be filled in the next couple of weeks, and more students would be appointed as senators also.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU prepares for Penn State offense

Regardless of the practices and film sessions, coach Joel Walton said he knows the No. 7 Ball State University men's volleyball team will not be fully prepared for No. 1 Penn State University's offense at the start of Saturday's match. Unlike most teams the Cardinals played this season, the Nittany Lions run a quick-tempo offense with the sets to the outside attackers having a smaller arch and the ball arriving quicker to speed up the game's pace, Walton said.

As Sean Astin preached into the microphone about the Clinton family's strong ability to lead, Chelsea Clinton looked down, rolled her eyes in embarrassment at the comments and walked onto the stage, embracing the crowd. When the former first daughter began to address the room filled with Ball State University students Tuesday about topics such as health care, college affordability and the North American Free Trade Agreement, the slow and steady tone of her voice brought in the crowd at the Atrium.

After greeting the crowd gathered on the main floor of the Atrium, Chelsea Clinton looked up the Arts and Journalism building staircase to see three stories worth of students peering back down at her. Ball State University's Homecoming Steering Committee is accepting nominations until April 2 for the 2008 Homecoming King and Queen candidates.

Spammers infiltrate BSU e-mail

Student e-mails are still under fire from spammers, causing e-mail accounts to become disabled and putting student messages at risk of being considered spam itself. Loren Malm, assistant director of security, policy, systems and assessment, said spammers infiltrated about 12 student e-mail accounts and Ball State University e-mail accounts had been disabled three times this semester.

Trials set in battery case

Three Ball State University-affiliated women arrested in connection with an assault at a party will return to court to face battery charges this summer, the Delaware County Clerk's Office said Tuesday. A fourth woman who was arrested in connection with the same incident will have her initial hearing on Thursday, according to the Clerk's Office.
