Soldiers becoming students will receive more money for school. With the Senate voting 75-22, and the House of Representatives voting 256-166, it shows the new G.I. Bill is a bipartisan effort. With the passage of the updated G.I. Bill, it means the government's doing the right thing for soldiers and future soldiers.

G.I. Bill to provide veterans more money

For Ball State University student William McQuail, there has never been any doubt he would enlist in the armed forces to fight for his country. When he was young, William would follow his father from one military installation to another. This, he says, without a doubt affected his decision to enlist in the military.

BSU, Beals sign eighth recruit

Ball State baseball coach Greg Beals announced Friday shortstop Andrew DeYoung has become the eighth recruit to offer a commitment to his program for the 2009 season. DeYoung is a 6-foot-3 shortstop from Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake. He's the second shortstop signed for the upcoming season, along with Tim Issler, who gave his commitment to Beals earlier this summer.

Information directors add new sports

The combination of losing two graduate assistants and a thinned communications branch of the Ball State athletics department left a couple sports lacking a sports information director this summer. Those positions were filled last week from within the department when associate athletics director Joe Hernandez assigned the men's basketball and baseball programs to sports information director Matt McCollester.

Cleveland picks up Bullington

After the Pittsburgh Pirates designated former Ball State pitching ace Bryan Bullington for assignment, the Cleveland Indians wasted no time picking up the former No. 1 overall draft pick. Bullington, who was the first pick in the 2002 draft, was claimed on waivers by the Indians last week, according to a press release.

Student dies from cancer

Although Ben Smith was diagnosed with colon cancer and fought it for four years, it never stifled his dreams. He foresaw a future where he graduated from Ball State University and became a probation officer. He continued to travel and started a family with his wife, Mindy.

Barack Obama office opens in downtown Muncie

Despite Indiana being a state that typically goes red, that didn't stop Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama from opening an office in downtown Muncie on Saturday. Five other locations opened across the state on Saturday. The other offices are located in Evansville, Fishers, Fort Wayne, South Bend and Lafayette.

I was poised in the library, facing a window as big as a movie theater screen. On the other side of the glass, the afternoon was shaded under a pavilion of clouds. Tree branches bobbed back and forth like sea buoys, and the pedestrians picked up their paces.

Ball State University alumnus Doug Jones returns to Muncie to star in a collaboration between Ball State affiliations and professional organizations. "My Name is Jerry" starts shooting today and will be filmed entirely in Muncie by both professionals in the entertainment field and Ball State students.

Event benefits players

Walking into Muncie's Northwest YMCA on Saturday, a tennis tournament takes place. It wasn't a typical tennis tournament, though, but the third McCann Memorial Wheelchair Open. And for tournament organizer Joy Wegener, it is a tournament for the benefit of players with physical disabilities.

BSU enacts new phone policy

Ball State University faculty and staff will have a more difficult time acquiring university-provided mobile devices because of a new policy instituted on July 1. The university enacted its Electronic Device Policy to meet terms stated within the Internal Revenue Service's Taxable Fringe Benefit Guide.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals set to compete in preseason WNIT

More than 15 months after hosting its first-ever Women's National Invitation Tournament game, Ball State University's women's basketball coach Kelly Packard accepted an invitation to participate in the preseason WNIT. The Cardinals, who released the first piece of their schedule Tuesday, will play Indiana University in the first round of the 2008 preseason WNIT.

FOOTBALL: Davis watched for Maxwell Award

After already experiencing aftershocks of awards in the wake of last season, Ball State University's football program received another award Tuesday. Junior quarterback Nate Davis was placed on the Maxwell Award Watch List with 75 other collegiate football players, along with Mid-American Conference peers Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan and Eugene Jarvis of Kent State.

The IRS just gave Ball State University an excuse to limit the use of university-owned cell phones and PDAs. According to the Internal Revenue Service's Taxable Fringe Benefit Guide, cell phones and PDAs are now "listed items," which means the university can't claim them for tax purposes.

University to demolish Neely house

About 44 years ago, Martha Ervin could look outside the back window of her new house and see gardens, neighborhood kids playing and family friends enjoying the weather. Now, she sees a 10-foot chain-link fence separating her one-story house from cranes, bulldozers, concrete and dirt.
