Football player arrested

Ball State football player Kyle Hoke, nephew of coach Brady Hoke, was arrested for driving while intoxicated Aug. 30, according to Delaware County jail officials. Hoke was booked at the Delaware County jail at 3:30 a.m. and released at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 30, according to jail officials.

Indiana SAT scores trail USA numbers

A recent news release by the Indiana Department of Education revealed that the SAT scores for the class of 2008 remained flat in comparison to scores nationwide and in Indiana last year. Indiana's average scores on the college entrance exam showed a one-point gain in math (508), a two-point drop in writing (481), and a one-point drop in reading (496) making the combined average score 1485.

Sororities across Ball State University's campus kicked off fall recruitment yesterday. This year brings change to the once formal recruitment process. "This year Ball State's sorority recruitment will be using a partially structured form of recruitment," vice president of public relations for Kappa Delta sorority, Kimberly Fox said.

A sellout crowd at Scheumann Stadium is expected Friday night when the Ball State University football team takes on Navy in a 7 p.m. game televised nationally on ESPN. The largest sports entertainment company in the United States has arrived in Muncie for the Ball State University, Navy football game. Two semi's pulled in Wednesday afternoon outside Scheumann Stadium carrying all the equipment ESPN will need to broadcast Friday night's game.

Team gathers information for state

The Ball State University biology department recently received a grant worth more than $250,000 from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to study the yellow perch population on Lake Michigan. "It's a great working relationship where many students are hired for work after they complete the study," professor Tom Lauer, who has directed the program since 2000, said.

Student senator arrested Saturday

A Student Government Association senator was arrested about 1 a.m. Saturday after police said she was intoxicated and fought with officers. Junior telecommunications major Andrea Watts, 21 of Westfield, also was charged with spitting on an officer at the jail.

Nine thefts have been reported since Fall Semester began

There is an increased risk of theft at the beginning of each semester, Gene Burton, director of public safety. "Trends have shown that students provide more opportunities for thefts to occur during these specific times of the year," Burton said. "The move in process often means that valuable items are left out in the open, and students who are naive to the opportunities they are creating are most at risk.

After last year's lackluster performance against Navy's triple-option offense, stopping the Midshipmen's rushing attack is Ball State coach Brady Hoke's primary focus Friday. Perhaps the surprise is how influential the Cardinals' secondary, particularly their safeties, will be on the effectiveness of Hoke's defensive game plan.

Changes made to parking

After vehicles at the Delaware County Fairgrounds dispersed Aug. 29, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton started to assess changes to the new game-day parking migration. With a week to prepare for Friday's football game against Navy, changes were made to Ball State University's fairground parking to better help students, Burton said.

THE RIGHT WORD: Governor's visit Friday could help Ball State

Ball State football is 1-0, a great start to the season for the Cardinals. However, according to The Star Press, only 22,500 can be held in the seats of Scheumann Stadium. Only 13,068 fans filled the stadium for the Northeastern University game, including 35 percent of the student body, which equates to about 53 percent of the arena (The Star Press).

MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals finish strong

Tying for seventh out of 12 teams at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in Farmington, Pa., the Ball State University men's golf team began its fall season with a slow start. Even though the Cardinals posted the third highest score in the third round, Ball State was unable to move much in the leader board.

Ball State University sophomore Bethany Planton sipped on a strawberry smoothie under the hot sun, though hidden by the shade of a beach umbrella. She was surrounded by huge green plants and the sounds of a waterfall. Planton only had one complaint. "They need beach volleyball," she said.

The technology available on Ball State University's campus has been a valuable resource for student Jacob Williams. "Campus technology is easy to access," he said. "In the next couple of years, it will be even better." Digital Corps has something to do with that easy access to campus technology.
