MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Middle attacker wins MIVA award

For the second time in the last three weeks, a member of the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team received a conference award. Middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week on Monday.

Redbeard the Pirate hopped up and down, wearing only a pair of pants and an eye patch in the six-degree air - he knew his time had come. The pirate brandished his sword high above his head and screamed as he jumped off the plank into the icy waters below. Grant "Redbeard" Yeamans is an intern at Muncie Alliance Church and earned his nickname for his red beard.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals sweep Flyers without Bussert

The Ball State University men's tennis team pounced on the University of Dayton from start to finish, resulting in a 7-0 victory on Saturday. "It was a match where we knew we were heavy favorites based on personnel," coach Bill Richards said. "As far as we want to get out of it, it's just about trying to get better.

Ensemble performs for children

Sounds of marimbas, timpanis, xylophones, drums and other instruments filled the room at the Muncie Children's Museum on Saturday as the Ball State Marimba and Percussion Ensemble played for an audience of children and their families. The ensemble participated in the museum's Music on the Move program, an all-day event for children to learn about and play different instruments.

New technology highlights festival

The lights dimmed and only stereos adorned the stage during the 39th annual New Music Festival at Sursa Hall on Friday night, and the crowd didn't know what to expect. Music focusing on the strengths of new technologies was the focus of the three-day festival, and many said the music that emanated from the stage was far from traditional.

TRACK AND FIELD: Williams leads Cardinals with record-setting performance

With two track invitationals beneath their cleats, the Ball State University track and field team trekked only 36 miles to the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational to continue its indoor season. The trip to Marion proved successful for the Cardinals, who earned first-place finishes in field and track events Saturday.

Cards induct four into hall of fame

On the wall of the Worthen Arena concourse hang the plaques of members of the Ball State University Athletics Hall of Fame. At the induction ceremony Friday night, former Cardinal swimmer Joy Gallagher, one of the newest members of the Hall of Fame, said she dreamed of seeing her face on the wall when the team would run laps around the arena.

GYMNASTICS: Change in venue doesn't help BSU

The Ball State University gymnastics team continued Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon as it lost its home opener against Central Michigan University 192.925 to 191.525 in Worthen Arena. Although the change of venue from Irving Gym, which is under construction, provided a change of scenery for the Cardinals, coach Nadalie Walsh said the team started their home stand just where they left off in 2008.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals lose to Bobcats

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team fell to Ohio University on Saturday. The team won four events in the meet. Freshman Emily Haifley, who broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke last week, won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.

So it's not the Colts versus the Bears, but tonight's Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals is still a big deal. It's the biggest stage in football and arguably all of sports. It's the chance for at least one Cardinals team to actually get a football title, or for one football franchise to be christened as the best ever.

University debates more Friday classes

A push by Ball State University's administration to schedule more Friday classes has been met with conflict between energy efficiency and student convenience. Associate Provost Marilyn Buck said scheduling more Friday classes would help students plan classes and graduate in four years.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards defeat Ohio 51-44

Freshman center Jarrod Jones led the Cardinals with 13 points and a career-high four blocks, while two other Ball State players reached double figure scoring as senior guard Laron Frazier had 11 points and senior guard Brandon Lampley added 10. Both Frazier and Lampley had three assists in the game.

Ball State University's men's tennis team will look to stay undefeated at home this season as it takes on the University of Dayton on Saturday. A victory against the Flyers would give the Cardinals an even record at 2-2 for the season. "It's a match where we are the favorite," coach Bill Richards said.
