WASHINGTON — Internet users who illegally share music, movies or TV shows online may soon get warning notices from their service providers that they are violating copyright law. Ignore the notices, and violators could face an Internet slowdown for 48 hours. Those who claim they are innocent can protest — for a fee.
LOS ANGELES — Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” a film about a fake movie, has earned a very real prize: best picture at the Academy Awards.
The Oscars hit its 85th year on Sunday with a resounding bang. The stage thundered with performances, acts and the footsteps of award-winning directors and actors. With close competition and so many film legends packed into one place, this particular show had its golden moments and “did that just happen?” double takes all orchestrated by host Seth MacFarlane.
The sound of a deep bass echoed through the room as the curtain rose. Shifting figures transitioned into men, bald and painted blue, pounding percussion instruments to the screams of the crowd. Three silhouettes danced along the walls of John R. Emens Auditorium on Tuesday night.

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan stars in “Zero Dark Thirty,” from early scenes at a detention site to the dramatic closing minutes as Navy SEALs assault the hideout of Osama bin Laden. Sam Watermeier writes a column for the Daily News. His views and opinions don’t necessarily agree with those of the newspaper or The Daily. “Zero Dark Thirty” is hard to watch, which is apparent right from the opening minutes, in which we hear cell phone and police scanner talk of the 9/11 attacks. This barrage of audio recordings played over a black screen evokes the feeling of staring into the abyss. The conversations regarding the attacks are chilling and tragic. If only the rest of the film evoked the same raw humanity. What starts as a stark reminder of our nation’s vulnerability becomes a cold, dry account of its revenge upon the man who attacked it.
It took Leatherface and his chainsaw to chase tiny hobbit Bilbo Baggins out of the top spot at the box office.
