'Titanic: The Musical' comes to Emens

Join Boebe Productions at 7:30 tonight as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s maiden voyage with “Titanic: The Musical.”

The familiar tale will come to life through contemporary songs in John R. Emens Auditorium.

“Although I haven’t seen the movie, I am looking forward to seeing the musical because I enjoy love stories set in different times,” Michelle Ripley, a junior marketing major, said.

The musical, which is the winner of five 1997 Tony Awards, takes audiences on the tragic journey of RMS Titanic — from the dreams the ship inspired to the sinking of the legendary ocean liner.

“Titanic is an interesting story,” Jordan Thomas, a junior theater major, said. “I’ve seen the movie and I’m excited to see how it compares. As a theater major, I’m also interested to see how they put the show together.”

The cast will take audiences back to the Edwardian-age as they reenact the final days aboard the ship. Just as in the film, class-distinctions of the Edwardian age will be prevalent. Audiences will be able to feel the plight of the immigrants who longed for a better life in America — from the middle class, who wanted desperately to attain riches, to the upper class, who hoped to preserve their wealth and fortune throughout the ages.

Sherri Contos, associate director of marketing for Emens Auditorium and Pruis Hall, said the show is a worthy addition to this season’s lineup and a great way to commemorate the Titanic’s 100th anniversary of the disaster.

Tickets are available at Emens box office, online or by calling 765-285-1539. Student tickets are available at no cost at Emens box office until 6 p.m. and also will be available for $11 at the door.
