Ball State reviews coach candidates in Indianapolis

In a weekend dominated by Final Four action on the court, Ball State University has been making noise off of it. Ball State is still in the midst of searching for a men's basketball coach, and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins met with at least four coaching candidates before the championship weekend in Indianapolis.

CLIMBING THE WALLS: Pope John Paul II's lessons continue

I am not Catholic, but a year ago, I was glued to the television on April 2, awaiting the most recent news on the health of Pope John Paul II. When the announcement was made that he had passed away, I didn't just cry - I wept uncontrollably. He was the people's Pope and a student, with doctorates in philosophy and theology, and he eventually became the most famous Pope in history.

Students rally against racism, for unity

With raised fists and shouts of "Whose streets? Our streets" a crowd of Ball State University students and supporters marched down McKinley Avenue Friday afternoon. Event organizer Ennis Adams said an incident last night inspired the rally. Adams and nearly 100 others were playing a game of midnight tag when the group was approached by police, Adams said.

SOFTBALL: Cardinals play first home games

After 16 games and 35 days into a season that started in late February, the Ball State University softball team (6-10) will finally play its first home game of the year this weekend as they begin their conference schedule. The Cardinals open Mid-American Conference play with a double-header against Akron University (8-13) this afternoon and then single games against Ohio University (15-15) Saturday and Sunday.

The Ball State University women's track and field team splits up its squad this weekend, traveling to two invitationals. Following last week's outdoor opener at Southern Illinois University, in which they placed second, the Cardinals return to action today and Saturday.

WHO, ME?: Accusation of Bonds for heavy steroid use far from surprising

There's little element of surprise in the latest accusation of steroid use brought against a star baseball player. That's because it's a player many have long-suspected of using steroids: Barry Lamar Bonds. Two long-time San Francisco Chronicle writers have spent the better part of three years reporting on Bonds' dealings with the scandal involving the supplement company BALCO.

BSU kicks smokers' butts

If you are having a hard time putting that cigarette down, the Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center can help. The Health Center offers two hour-long smoking cessation classes per month during three months each semester. One class is offered around noon and the other in the afternoon, health educator Lisa Thomason said.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State looks to carry momentum into weekend

The Ball State University men's volleyball team gets a relatively light weekend as it gets Friday evening off to rest for Saturday's conference match against the Lewis Flyers (9-13, 2-5 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association). Ball State (17-5, 5-4 MIVA) beat Lewis 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-14) during their last contest at Lewis, in Romeoville, Ill.

Sunday will mark the end of time in Indiana - well, the end of Eastern Standard Time for this year. With the implementation of daylight-saving time in Indiana after a 30-year hiatus, many Hoosiers will turn their clocks ahead Sunday for the first time in their lives.

Teams compete in chili challenge

Twelve teams are set to compete in this year's Cardinal Chili Challenge on the University Green. Judging begins at 10:45 a.m. with Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora and members of the university staff, who will determine the champions. The competition spans three categories - spiciest, most original and best overall.

Calendar ends Saturday finals

Students will no longer have Saturday finals as of Fall 2007, according to a revised academic calendar approved by University Senate on Wednesday. The plan also eliminates a day of Fall Break, and students will attended Friday classes on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Eight years ago, Paul Buis put a small digital recorder in his right shirt pocket, hit play and began lecturing his class. When he finished, the Ball State University associate professor of computer science took the recording and uploaded it into his computer, compressing the file to conserve hard drive space.

All college students should know that, yet several cases of plagiarism occur at Ball State University each year. But that's, at least in part, because the leaders of today are not giving us the proper role models.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Tough opponents fill weekend schedule

Things aren't going to get any easier for coach Kathy Bull and the Ball State University women's tennis team. After starting off conference play with two losses last weekend, two tough opponents travel to Muncie for matches. On Friday, Ball State (6-8, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) plays Bowling Green, which is 13-4 (2-0 MAC) on the year.

BASEBALL: Seniors begin to pick up slack after sluggish start

After a sluggish offensive start, a trio of seniors on the Ball State University baseball team has started to produce results. First baseman Brad Miller, center fielder Mike Sullivan and second baseman Kyle Dygert have been key contributors during Ball State's four-game winning streak.
