Court dismisses case against BSU student

A trespassing charge against a Ball State University freshman who stayed in the campus bookstore after closing hours to study was dismissed in Muncie City Court on Monday. On Jan. 24, university police arrested Timothy Whybrew at the Ball State Bookstore in the Art and Journalism Building on suspicion of trespassing.

LETTERS: Student interests don't seem to be priority for School of Music

Dear Editor, Congratulations to Kirk Trevor, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra and the Ball State Symphony Orchestra on closing their respective seasons with two magnificent concerts this weekend. I was fortunate to have been a part of both performances, but even as the thunderous applause rose into two standing ovations - a musician's dream - it felt bittersweet.

Officer receives reprimand

A Ball State University police officer was verbally reprimanded after an investigation revealed he used inappropriate language while dealing with students. Officer Tom Honeycutt used the phrases "get the hell out of here" and "get your asses out of here" while trying to disband a group of students.

Swing into Spring

Cardinal Hills Located a driving time of 15 minutes away from the Ball State campus, Cardinal Hills isn't the most conveniently located area golf course for most Ball State students, but is well worth a visit for those seeking a cheap, relaxing round. The course's main attraction is its special student rate, which gives students who provide a valid ID the opportunity to walk the course all day during the week for $7 and for $10 during the weekends.

Today is a national holiday - in Israel. Across Israel, air-raid sirens ring for two full minutes while people stand still and silent. Flags fly at half-staff. The silence commemorates Yom Hashoah, the Jewish day of Holocaust remembrance - the day for mourning the 6 million Jews who were killed during that period.

SOFTBALL: Cards shut out for 10th time this year

It is said in softball that pitching and defense win championships. However, the Ball State University softball team (12-23, 5-9 Mid-American Conference) is in search of some offense to reach the championship level. The Cardinals suffered their fourth loss this season to a school in the Big Ten Conference Monday, as they managed only three hits in a 2-0 loss to Indiana University (25-22-1, 6-9 Big Ten Conference).

Thompson hires second assistant for basketball team

Men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson added a second assistant coach to his staff during the weekend. Troy Collier, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach at Missouri State, joins Steve Flint as the first two members of Thompson's staff.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards advance to semis of MIVA tourney

Ball State University beat the Lakers from Mercyhurst College two times during the regular season in three-game sweeps. Saturday night wasn't any different as the No. 14 Cardinals showed the Lakers no mercy in another 3-0 victory (30-25, 30-23, 30-21). With the win, the Cardinals advance to the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association semifinals this weekend.

BASEBALL: Eagles win series over Cards with walk-off single

A series between evenly-matched Ball State University and Eastern Michigan University came down to the last at-bat of the weekend. With the bases loaded and one out, first baseman Steve Bradshaw singled to left center field, driving home the game-winning run for Eastern Michigan (20-17 overall, 9-6 Mid-American Conference) and giving the Eagles the two games to one series win with a 5-4 victory on Sunday.

She may be raunchy, risque and radical on stage, but Margaret Cho has a more serious side. Cho is one of the most vocal representatives of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender movement, and Spectrum is bringing her to campus to kick off its annual Pride Week.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals split final regular season matches

The Ball State University women's tennis team completed its regular season this weekend, winning one match and losing the other. On Friday, the Cardinals defeated the University of Akron 4-3 in a match that was closer than expected. The Zips came into the match with a 1-5 conference mark.

Annual carnival breaks attendance records

Dry skies and balmy temperatures led to record attendance at the third-annual Late Nite Carnival on Friday, event organizers said. Late Nite Assistant Director Jessica Inman estimated people attending numbered between 6,500 and 7,000. This dwarfs last year's figures, which hovered around 2,500 because of rain and unseasonably cold temperatures, Inman said.

GOUGE AWAY: Ohio joins list of states making attempts to restrict women's right for abortions

It is not a good time to be a woman in this country. With the recent swing to a more conservative, good-old-boy government, more measures to keep women in their "rightful place" are sneaking in from the sidelines. Anyone who followed the recent proposal in Indiana - which was essentially a ban against pregnancy for single women and gay women - should know what I mean.

MEN'S GOLF: Poor final round earns Cardinals 10th place finish

The men's golf team struggled in the final round of the Michigan State Fossum Invitational. Ball State University shot the highest final-round score (302) and finished in a tie for 10th place in the 12-team field. "We just didn't get the job done," coach Mike Fleck said.

Students participate in Earth Week events

Sounds of music, sights of crowds and rumors of wildcats on display drew Ball State University students and Muncie community members to University Green on Friday and Saturday. They had discovered Ball State's Earth Week festivities. On Friday, the Natural Resources and Environmental Management department sponsored an educational event to inform students about their effect on the earth, Abby McCoy, president of the Natural Resources Club, said.

WOMEN'S TRACK: Cards dominate in pre-conference meet

The Ball State University women's track and field team boosted their confidence at the Anderson Pre-Conference meet Saturday. Ball State dominated the field Saturday, though the meet was not scored. In past weeks, coach Sue Parks has called for a more spirited team as the Cardinals prepare for the upcoming Mid-American Conference outdoor championships.
