TURNING A BLIND EYE: Idiocy prevalent throughout country

In the Nov. 27 edition of Sports Illustrated, Rick Reilly's column "Dingbats, Dodos and Doozies" focused on idiots in the sports world and the absurd things they've done. His examples of global sports lunacy were interesting, to say the least. I, however, felt it unfair that idiocy outside the sporting world was given short shrift.

Registers to accept credit, debit

Ball State University faculty, students and staff can look forward to registers across campus with credit and debit card capabilities. The Micros registers have been installed in the Atrium, and will be put into other dining locations. While Director of Dining Services Jon Lewis said he was unsure when the bookkeeping would be finished and the registers will be able to take credit and debit cards, they were capable of the transactions.

OUR VIEW: Plastic payments

At some point in the past 5 years, paying for a $4 coffee using a credit or debit card has gone from an oddity to a normality. In fact, online purchasing, Paypal and credit cards have taken the places of checks, cash and going to the store. Ball State University has taken a positive step by replacing the cash registers in the Atrium with machines that are credit and debit card compatible.

SGA senators approve spring Elections Board

Members of Student Government Association do not foresee problems with conflict of interest with the Elections Board that was approved Wednesday. Last February, SGA removed the Elections Board after discovering the board members and one of the presidential slates were connected to Theta Chi fraternity.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bulldog beatdown

INDIANAPOLIS - Ball State University's men's basketball team was held to its lowest scoring total since 1957 as No. 14 Butler University rolled to a 65-41 victory. The Cardinals (3-5) shot 28.6 percent from the field in the first half, while the Bulldogs (10-0) shot 10-of-21 from the field and 4-of-9 from the 3-point range in the first half to take a 35-17 lead at halftime.

State approves BSU's $62 million budget

More than $62 million in construction and repairs will be made to Ball State University, as the State Budget Committee approved two projects and $4 million in back payments Tuesday. Plans for renovation of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center and construction of North Residence Hall were both given the go-ahead, Tom Morrision, associate vice president for human resources and state relations, said.

Sigma Chi serves breakfast dinner to raise money

Breakfast and sleep are important before finals, but sleeping in usually takes priority over pancakes and eggs. To solve this problem, the Ball State University Sigma Chi fraternity is offering students breakfast-for-dinner from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the fraternity's basement.

College, professor, students donate to memorial fund

Honors College students are donating money to a scholarship in junior Alyssa Couch's name. She died in a car accident Nov. 17 in Yorktown while on the way to tutor someone. Couch's family is still in the process of setting up the fund and has not decided on its specific name or purpose, Couch's roommate, junior Kendra Craycraft, said.

BSU director appears in film for Santa Fe festival

Jim Coffin's passion for the Southwestern United States and American Indian tribes has culminated into an on-screen role for a film that will be shown at the Santa Fe Film Festival today and Saturday. The festival began Wednesday and runs through Sunday. Coffin, director of International Programs at Ball State University, said he decided as an anthropology student at Indiana University to share his fascination and love of the Southwest with students.

Ball State University students welcomed Voltaire to the Student Center Ballroom stage Wednesday night for the Concert from Hell III: Hell Freezes Over. Voltaire is best known for his song "Brains!" that was featured in Cartoon Network's "The Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy."

Faculty couple preserve language

Top linguists predict that 50 to 90 percent of the world's approximate 6,000 languages will be extinct within the century, Ball State University Professor of Linguistics Carolyn MacKay said. The United States and Canada have lost 80 percent of their previous 187 indigenous languages, she said.

A victory at Illinois State University tonight would put the Ball State University women's basketball team at 6-0 for the first time in the program's history. "I think the team is really looking forward to [setting the record] in the terms of another championship approach that can happen to the team this year," Cardinals' coach Tracy Roller said.

Muncie is in need of a makeover more extreme than even network television can provide. Hardly a day goes by where I do not see some streetlight in disrepair. I cannot read the Muncie Star Press or the Daily News without hearing of some violent robbery committed against innocent victims.

YOUR TURN: Recycling programs need improvement

Since September, I have asked a couple dozen Ball State University students about the recycling program on campus. More than 90 percent feel the program has few problems - however, when I asked the students what could and could not be recycled very few gave an informed answer.
