BASKETBALL: Basketball team gains new recruits

Ball State University men's basketball coach Billy Taylor announced late last week that he added four recruits to his first recruiting class with the Cardinals. Taylor, who led the Cardinals to a 6-24 record last year in his first season, welcomed Plymouth High School senior Randy Davis, Michigan City senior Jarrod Jones, Jennings County senior Zach Fields and junior college transfer Brawley Chisholm.

Family has party in honor of son

In memory of Ball State University student Travis Smith, Smith's family had a block party in his honor Saturday. The money raised from the party will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club in Terre Haute. Smith died after a traffic accident at about 6:30 p.

BASEBALL: Cards kicked out of MAC tournament

In his time at Ball State, closer Kyle Heyne has been apart of many memorable moments indidividually and for the Cardinals' baseball program. The senior was apart of another memorable moment Friday afternoon, albeit one he'd rather forget. Pitching in his last game with the Cardinals against Northern Illinois, Heyne allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth, surrendering a 6-5 season-ending loss to the Huskies.

Gift creates minor for BSU students

Students of the Department of Technology will be able to pursue a new minor because of a gift-in-kind from Ball State University alumnus Mikel Harry, according to a press release. The minor is called the Six Sigma Black Belt certification and will make students more marketable as problem solvers, according to the press release.

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO - Fresh off a season-ending victory, it looked as if Ball State University would continue its momentum in the opening game of the Mid-American Conference tournament. Ball State got off to a successful start early against No. 4-seed Northern Illinois, earning a six-run lead after the third inning.

Robin Thomas, 26, had a stroke when she was 18. Her mother, Jean Thomas, was left to cope with the aftermath. Throughout Robin Thomas' recovery process, Jean Thomas said there was one thing that inspired Robin Thomas to try to speak, move and socialize; working at I CAN and Beyond I CAN.

Honors program explores identity

From cell phones to computers, from busy intersections to ATMs, cameras have become an inescapable fact of life for most people. A group of Ball State University students will spend the first summer session exploring issues of identity in an Honors College colloquium on American photography.

Bricks replaced on campus

The patio outside Carmichael Circle was in a state of disrepair, until bricks were recently laid. The original concrete patio was removed because it had started to fall apart. The project cost Ball State University $40,000, including the cost of the materials used for building and landscaping.

Friend remembered

Larry Waters was a gregarious man, inherently humorous, honest and ethical, according to friends and colleagues who attended a memorial service for him Wednesday at "Beneficence." Waters, dean of admissions and enrollment from 1997 to 2007, died of a brain aneurysm May 15 at the age of 70.

Campaign gives items to troops

Scotty's Brewhouse's efforts to provide service not only to its customers but also to the men and women serving overseas ended Monday with more than 150 items collected. Those items will go to Indianapolis Thursday to begin the process of being shipped to troops.

Alumni Center changes patio

The Alumni Center has replaced its concrete patio with longer-lasting clay bricks. It is project that Tanner Underwood, Ball State University's project architect, said everyone was ready to see completed. Alumni Center Director Brandon Johnson agreed the project needed to be done.

BASEBALL: Three Cardinals selected to all-MAC teams

The Mid-American Conference named three Ball State baseball players to 2008 all-MAC teams, the league office announced Wednesday. Senior center fielder Wayne Bond Jr. and senior pitcher Kyle Heyne were named to the first team, while sophomore catcher Zach Dygert was selected to the second team.
