Week to promote community service

Ball State University's Leadership and Service Learning strives to promote student involvement in social issues and community service through its Week of Action, which begins today. Kathy Smith, associate director for Leadership and Service Learning, said she hoped this week of activities, which takes place every semester, would get students thinking about the world in which they live.

Dean to visit other school as job finalist

Associate Dean of Student Affairs Randy Hyman will visit Central Missouri State on Wednesday and Thursday to speak with students and interview for the position of Vice President of Student Affairs. Hyman is one of three finalists for the position. The other two finalists are from Northeastern University and University of Kansas-Lawrence.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State loses first match of season against IPFW

The Ball State University men's volleyball team split two matches on the weekend, bouncing back from a poor first game to win in the second.-á IPFW handed Ball State their first loss of the season, making it a long bus ride for the Cards to Kenosha, Wis.-á "They came out a little more prepared to win than we did," coach Joel Walton said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards lose in Bracket Buster

Even after Ball State had gone the final nine minutes without a field goal during the ESPN Bracket Buster on Saturday, the team still had a chance to win. With 18 seconds remaining, junior Skip Mills pulled up for a 3-pointer that would have broken the 69-69 tie with Tennessee State.

THE DORK REPORT: Violence shows lack of human progress

I wonder if humans will ever evolve. The protests that have caused an international crisis in Europe and the Middle East following the publication in several European newspapers of cartoons satirizing the prophet Muhammad - which is considered a sacrilege in Islam - have only convinced me that the distance between Homo sapiens sapiens and our earlier ancestors isn't far.

BASEBALL: Cards start season 1-2

After Saturday's baseball game was rained out, postponing the game to Sunday, Ball State University's offense came out red hot in the second of a three-game series with Alabama-Birmingham. The Cardinals lost the series 2-1, but their lone win in that second game came in thrilling fashion.

TRACK AND FIELD: Broncos edge out Cardinals by one point in season finale

Standout performances highlighted the women's indoor track and field team's season closer Friday night. At the annual Ball State Triangular, Western Michigan edged Ball State University 106 to 105, while Miami finished in third with 87 points. Close races all evening spelled the difference as the Broncos and Cardinals stretched away from Miami and fought back and forth.

Today begins a Week of Action for Ball State University. It's a week of blood drives and cell phone collections, speakers and panel discussions, a craft night, a concert and even a poverty simulation. It's a week for students to realize they have voices and find ways to use those voices, Kathy Smith, associate director of Leadership and Service Learning, said.

Student arrested on drug charges

A Ball State University student posed as a doctor's assistant to illegally acquire prescription drugs, state police reports. Arthur James Kistner, 21, 11329 Rolling Springs Road, Carmel, was arrested on charges of obtaining and attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud or deceit.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State defeats two ranked opponents

The slogan around Bloomington is "IU is red hot." If that's true, at least on Sunday, it was Cardinal red that was hot.-á The No. 69 Ball State University men's tennis team demolished No. 60 Indiana 6-1 to earn their seventh straight victory and third consecutive win against a ranked opponent.

LETTERS: Racial discrimination not only on-campus prejudice problem

Dear Editor, One Saturday night, while taking a walk down McKinley Avenue with my friend, I saw a car full of drunk girls speed by. "Hey fat-ass baby," one screamed out the window. I have heard comments like this many times before, and not a week goes by without some idiot yelling out his window to "Go to Weight Watchers" or something equally demeaning - but it still hurts every time.
