This year’s harsh winter conditions already have caused Muncie to spend about $16,000 more than last year on repairing potholes, most of which goes toward a temporary fix. The city spent roughly $60,000 last year on patching roads using hot and cold mixes, said Donnie Wright, supervisor for the Department of Street and Public Works. The expense was split evenly between the winter and the summer.

Asteroid passing Earth will be closer than moon

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — An asteroid is headed this way. But even though it will come closer than the moon, astronomers say it will pose no danger. The newly discovered asteroid, called 2014 DX110, will hurtle between the moon and Earth on Wednesday.


Catholics celebrate Ash Wednesday

The Catholic Church, its more than 1 billion members and other denominations will celebrate Ash Wednesday today, the first day of Lent. Brogan Drumm, a junior theatrical studies major, called herself as a “cradle Catholic,” which means she was born and raised into the faith. “There have been times where I haven’t wanted to be Catholic, but all in all, I always seem to come back to my faith,” she said.

Former acting president of Ball State dies

Richard Burkhardt, a former acting president of Ball State and Burkhardt Building’s namesake, died Tuesday morning in Muncie. Burkhardt began his career in higher education as the director of the division of teacher preparation at Syracuse University. In 1952, Burkhardt came to Ball State where he first served as the vice president for instructional affairs and dean of faculties, according to the Ball State website.


South Sudanese flee to Darfur

UNITED NATIONS — The civil war in South Sudan has left people so hungry and desperate for relief that they are even fleeing across the border into Darfur, a long-troubled region of famine and suffering in neighboring Sudan. Tony Lanzer, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for South Sudan, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that some 900,000 South Sudanese are homeless since the war erupted in December, and about 195,000 of them have fled as refugees to Uganda, Ethiopia and Darfur.


Survey suggests 9 million women in EU are rape victims

VIENNA — A survey of 42,000 women across the European Union suggests that about one in 10 have been the victims of sexual violence, and half of them reported being raped. Described as the largest of its kind, the survey released by the EU’s Agency for Fundamental Rights is the most ambitious effort yet to gauge the extent of sexual violence and harassment experienced by the 186.6 million women in the EU’s 28 nations.

U.S. prepares $1 billion aid package for troubled Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine — In a somber show of U.S. support for Ukraine’s new leadership, Secretary of State John Kerry walked the streets Tuesday where more than 80 anti-government protesters were killed last month and promised beseeching crowds that American aid is on the way. Kerry met in Ukraine with the new government’s acting president, prime minister, foreign minister and top parliamentary officials. Speaking to reporters afterward, Kerry urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stand down and said the U.S. is looking for ways to de-escalate the mounting tensions.
