'A Festival of New Plays' showcases student work

This year, “A Festival of New Plays” will feature two student-run, one-act shows. The first of these performances, “Daughter Box,” tells the story of a grieving mother. The play explores how the mother deals with painful memories while striving to come to terms with the realities of the present.

Cardinal Connection $400 fine upheld

Next academic year’s Student Government Association executive board will have to pay the $400 maximum fine for campaigning during voting despite appealing the decision. A Student Rights and Community Standards hearing Monday night upheld Cardinal Connection’s campaign violation with a unanimous vote.

University officials, legislators will meet privately on campus about intelligent design controversy

University President Jo Ann Gora has asked four legislators to meet in person to discuss a disagreement about teaching intelligent design and science on campus. Indiana legislators, led by Senate Education Committee Chairman Dennis Kruse, previously sent complaints about the university’s treatment of Eric Hedin, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy, after he was accused of teaching intelligent design instead of science in an Honors College colloquium.


Founding the first 24-hour sports network

For the founder of ESPN, being laid off was the fuel it took to create the first 24-hour sports network. Bill Rasmussen was fired from his job as communications manager for the New England Whalers on Memorial Day weekend in 1978, after the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. Months later, he created ESPN.

Room Bullies

This year, the Office of Housing and Residence Life is facing a new problem: students who bully others into leaving their future dorm rooms in hopes of buying a double room for themselves. The office has received three complaints so far, said Alan Hargrave, associate vice president of Student Affairs and director of Housing and Residence Life.


Police arrest 1 person at Muncie Gras, says official

Despite a crowd of several hundred people at an event centered around drinking, police arrested just one person at the annual Muncie Gras, said a Muncie Police Department official. MPD Lt. Al Williams said “this year was as calm as any,” as 20 officers patrolled Walnut Street throughout Saturday night. Typically, MPD arrests anywhere from zero to three people at Muncie Gras each year, Williams said.



Feds: Inmate sent Obama threat to wrong address

PITTSBURGH — A convicted child molester pleaded not guilty to sending a threatening letter to President Barack Obama — albeit to the wrong address. Thirty-four-year-old Joseph Savage, of West Leisenring, Pa., entered the plea when he appeared before a federal magistrate Monday. His defense attorney, Melvin Vatz, declined to comment on the charge.

As temperatures dropped and 9:45 p.m. hit, students poured out of the Robert Bell Building lobby, ready to fight off zombies. The Urban Games League’s “Humans vs. Zombies” game started midnight Thursday and ended Monday night.

The wintery air didn’t stop a crowd from converging downtown for Muncie Gras 2014. Clad in bikini tops, winter coats and everything in between, both Ball State students and local Muncie townies brought their best New Orleans spirit to Walnut Street. Acrobats, musicians and amateur and professional exotic dancers lined the streets and filled venues.

Campus groups take week to highlight women’s issues

This week several university groups will work together to bring attention to women’s issues on campus. As part of National Women’s Month, Ball State is celebrating Women’s Week with activities including a Women with Disabilities panel, a coming out as a feminist event and two performances of the “Vagina Monologues.”
