To many Esports fanatics, Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere is someone many people—especially women—look up to. Whether it be her large presence and voice within the gaming industry or what she signifies for their professional ambition, Sjokz has paved the way for many young voices in the gaming industry who wish to fill her big shoes over the past 20 years.
Fall marks the time of year when Americans go to haunted houses, carve pumpkins, and curl up on the couch with a bucket of popcorn while walking horror movies. One of the horror flicks that should be at the top of every list is Scream. The film is like lightning in a bottle. It combines horror and comedy while having clever commentary on horror films woven throughout. With an all-star cast including Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Jamie Kennedy who have created some of horror's most iconic characters, the film was able to go on to be a success both critically and financially. But how did this iconic film, not based on any previous source material, begin in the first place?
Due to some weaknesses in the story department, ‘The Last of Us Part II’ is not as powerfully resonant as its predecessor. However, this sequel proves worthy in continuing the original’s heartbreaking narrative by providing extensive character development, impactful themes, and beautifully desolate locales.
‘Da Five Bloods’ has a great start, but isn’t able to continue that same quality throughout. With a great cast and a standout performance by Boseman plus an interesting story, the movie is a very watchable film, but it still has its problems.
‘Minecraft Dungeons’ is a new entry in Mojang Studios’ sandbox universe that builds on the charm of the base game and adds exciting mechanics that are enjoyable whether you’re playing alone or with friends.
‘Notes on a Conditional Form’ is a true symbol of individuality due to its unique sound and messages that young people can relate to. No previous album comes close to its writing.
While there were a few hiccups in the story and character department, season 7 concludes 'The Clone Wars' in spectacular fashion thanks to its improved animation, substantial emotional weight, and brilliantly executed “Siege of Mandalore” story arc.
Rap. A genre born within the 1970s block parties of New York City by blending funk, soul, and disco. A genre hailed for its wordplay, punchlines, complexity, and “real” lyrics. Artists like Tupac and Biggie preach systematic issues like racism, class divide, drugs, etc. However, anybody unacquainted with the genre will tell you it glamorizes sex, violence, anarchy, and drugs. As this may have been true within the past couple of years, I think a light has been slowly growing right under our noses. A light that was almost snuffed out on Dec. 8, 2019, but has prospered above all. That light is Juice Wrld.
Even with some unique visuals and interesting appeals to change the face of hero shooters, 'Bleeding Edge' is another sorrowful, sinful lesson in not just the current state of the genre, but the games industry as a whole. Passionate developers aside, this new MOBA is a bloody mess.
5SOS’s fourth album, 'CALM,' is their best album yet. Their lyricism is the best it's ever been due to their vulnerability, honesty, and authenticity.
As summer draws near, music festivals and artists typically blast social media and their websites with promotional videos and pre-sale ticket options. But social distancing guidelines issued to stop the spread of COVID-19 — a disease that has taken the lives of more than 323,000 globally — has taken center stage. Although many fans are sympathetic to the regulations, they are bummed at the slew of music festivals and concerts that are either being cancelled or postponed. Many are worried about the long-term impact of the pandemic on the music scene.
With dreamy, soft vocals over a relaxed electronic beat, it’s difficult not to fall head-over-heels in love with pop duo X Lovers. This duo consists of London Jackson and Jacob Ames. They are childhood best friends who met in fourth grade in their hometown of Nevada City, California, and have been inseparable since then. Jackson is the vocalist and tends to most of the songwriting while Ames produces all their music. They are stars on the rise and — in my eyes — they deserve more appreciation.
The past few weeks have affected the movie industry in a variety of ways. Ever since stay-at-home and shelter-in-place orders were put in place, theaters across the world have shut down indefinitely without any assurance of when they’ll reopen. With the closing of theaters, many films that were to be released in the months between March and July have either been assigned new release dates or pushed back indefinitely. Not only have movie studios and those who work on films been greatly affected, but theaters themselves have been taking major blows after being forced to shut down. With the quarantine put in place and no definite answer for when it will be lifted, the movie industry has had to learn how to roll with the punches and adapt to a new world.
Each day feels more like we’re living in a strange apocalyptic movie. Everything in life is canceled and grocery stores are completely out of paper products. In the midst of these strange times, many of us have endless downtime to catch up on movies and TV shows we’ve been wanting to watch. Another great opportunity to keep ourselves occupied while we’re all sitting at home keeping our distance from one another is the chance to catch up on some books we’ve been intending to read.
